Eating less at 9 weeks
« on: April 13, 2011, 16:19:00 pm »
My LO will be 9 weeks this Friday and for almost a week now he is eating less than he used to. He is already 12lb and on a good day he takes only 23oz. We have switched to Allimentum, which has a pretty bad taste but he was already eating less before we switched. Usually, he would take a bottle and would eat 90ml or less in like 10 min and then just pushes nipple out of his mouth. If I try to give it to him again and succeed he usually spits up all the extra formula out anyways. I'm a bit worried because he is suppose to eat 4 to 6 oz per feed and he usually takes only 3oz at best. He is definitely too young to stretch the time between feeds because he could only stay up for 1 hour and 10 min at most. I don't think that faster nipple will make a difference because he only takes 10 min to eat before he starts to refuse his bottle. I think it's too early for teeth. Any ideas? Thanks

Why did you switch to the Alimentum?? Does your LO have reflux or cows milk protein intolerance?

What size nipple are you using?

He has reflux and we've been trying everything. We switched to Allimentum to see if that will help. I've switched to no. 2 nipple on born free bottle for 2 days but he seemed to be more gassy now may be because he gulps more air with no. 2 nipple so I just switched back to no. 1 nipple today to see if that makes a difference with gas. Also, he doesn't seem to be taking more formula in with no. 2 nipple just does it much faster, which I don't think such a good thing for a refluxer.

And could you say how much time he has between one feed to the next one?
Did you weigh him to see if his weight is ok?

When did you make the switch to Alimentum?? It has a very odd taste and often babies take some time to get used to it. Their intake is often low at that time.

It does take LOs a few days to get used too a change in flow rate after a nipple change (and that does mean gulping and gas). I recently had this issue switching between a 2 and 3 with DD and it the end it was best to stick with the 3 and give her chance to forget about slower flow and get used to it. But definitely try the size 1 again and see.

We switched a bit more then 2 weeks ago. I checked my chart and even before the switch he was intaking less and less. We are sticking with no. 1 nipple for now because he became much gassy and that's was the only change that we did. He doesn't seem to intake more because of no. 2 just faster. thanks

He is on 3 hour schedule and has been gaining weight but the last time we checked was right before his intake decreased. We are off to the dr on Friday and see how his weight is.

Update: LO is now 13 weeks old and we are more then ever struggling with feeds. He cries and pushes bottle away if he is awake so we are trying to do half/asleep feeding. I've been doing some research and found info on dysphagia. It looks like the symptoms are very similar to reflux and to what my LO is going through, also it looks like very often babies with reflux develop dysphagia due to liquid getting into their lungs. Am I crazy to think that he may have dysphagia? Any experience with reflux and dysphagia? Also, he has been with babysitter second day and she has problems feeding him, he takes a bit more than 2oz with her at each feed. I feel very frustrated and don't know what to do. Should I make apt with GI? Please help.

Dysphagia is a difficulty swallowing anything - either a motor coordination issue or a physical obstruction.

What you are talking about is whether your LO is aspirating fluid back into their lungs. This can be a complication of reflux, or any other cause of dysphagia.

I really think your LO needs a proper medical assessment with the concerns you are expressing. Aspiration can be VERY serious. So yes - make an appointment and get your LO seen as a priority.

Thanks Liz. I'm trying to make apt with pedi GI as soon as possible. I just feel sometimes that i'm making myself crazy with coming up with all these reasons for his problems. I really hope that it's just reflux and he still just needs to be properly medicated but I really need to get to the bottom of it and to make him more comfortable. As of today he has been 9 days on Prevacid 7.5mg per day and we haven't seen any improvement. Stopped Zantac when we were one week on Prevacid and at least we don't see any regressionsas. As you said before I don't want him to be over medicated if it's not necessary. I really hope that Prevacid will kick in soon. I'm even afraid to think of what's we are going to do if it's not :(

Hi, I just wanted to share that my baby slowed down in his eating after the 8th week too, the nurse said that this is normal and from now on they don't put as much weight as they used to every week. He eats less every meal but is still eating regularly and thriving.
I hope this helps.
Emily

Emily, that makes me feel better. I was just going to post that my 9wk old is eating less as well and I was a bit concerned. He still has plenty of wet/dirty nappies and on Mon I'll get him weighed again to make sure he's not dropping. He doesn't feel like he's losing any weight, but I'm not sure he's gaining either. He's on the low end of the weight charts, so I worry about him losing any.
