Habitual or Hungry?
« on: April 17, 2011, 13:39:06 pm »
Hi, I am having a hard time deciding if my DS's wakings are habitual or of hunger. He wakes at the same times every night, 1:15 and 4:15, which makes me think habitual. BUT he drinks a whole bottle and the times are evenly spaced 3 hours apart (we do a DF at 10) which makes me think hunger. I read in Tracy's book that a 3 mo should be able to go 5 to 6 hours straight at night and I would really like to drop the 1am feed if he is ready for it. Thanks for the feedback!

How old is your child? 3 mo born 1-11-11
What’s his/her daily routine?
             Wake up at 7 am
We eat every three hours after that and do about 1 hr 15 min awake and 1 hr 45 min nap
Cat Nap from 5:30 to 6
Bath at 6:30, followed by bottle and bed (Usually asleep by 7:15 or 7:30 at the latest)
             DF at 10pm
What’s nap routine?
At the first yawn I swaddle him and we sing and slow dance. I then put him to sleep in the swing. He sleeps in his crib at night but won't at nap time. My husband and I are planning to conquer this habit soon.
How long are naps?
He will wake up after 40 -45 min and then fuss for about 5 to 10 min. Usually he will put himself back to sleep but sometimes I have to pick him up and comfort him. Naps last 1 hr and 45 min, sometimes 2 hours depending on how long he was awake before that.
What's bedtime routine? Time?
Wind down with some stories, then a bath. Then we have a warm bottle and swaddle him. We do rock him to sleep but he doesen't seem to have any trouble putting himself back to sleep in the middle of the night and after he eats after NF I put him in his crib awake and lay my hand on his tummy and he falls back to sleep on his own.
Do you bottle or breastfed??  We breastfed until about 2 weeks ago when we switched to formula. He has taken to the formula very well.
How much? or how long? about 6 oz every 3 hours around the clock
If breastfed.. one side or both?? (at each feed)
How many wakes per night?  2 NW after the DF
What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up? He will cry until we feed him, then he is up for about 45 min to 1 hour total.
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry? I am pretty good about distinguishing mantra cries and only go to him if he is actually crying.
What have you tried to settle??  shh and pat, which calms him  but doesn't put him back to sleep. I shh for so long I get dizzy. I've tried picking him up and patting and walking with him. And rocking him. All will calm him temporarily but he will not go back to sleep until I feed him.
What do you do for A time and how long is it? A time is 1 hr to 1 hr and 15 min including feeding. We first play with the mobile or baby gym, then have some massage or music time, then read some books and snuggle until he gets sleepy. He is easily overstimulated so I have to be really careful with A time.
Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones? No
Have you introduced cereal? Why, how much, and how many times a day? (for LO’s under 6 months) No
Do they have a prop? If so what is it? We intially rock him to sleep at night but he puts himself back to sleep after that. He naps in his swing but sleeps in his crib at night.
Do they have a lovie He has a lovie I use to calm him down after play time but I don't use it when he is sleeping for fear of SIDS.

Yes we have a white noise sound machine that we keep on all night. : ) One more question. How will I know when he is ready to drop that first NF? Thanks!

I think at this age I would agree with Jane, if he is finishing the bottles and taking a normal size feed at wake up then he is hungry. If he starts refusing his first bottle or taking a lot less that's generally a cue that he's not really needing the nightfeeds.

You said he takes about 6oz during the day - is he draining bottles? If he is you need to add another oz into the bottles, you can also try a faster teat (if you haven't already!) to see if that helps his take a bit more at the day feed. Over the next month he should start extending his feed times a bit to get to the 4 hour EASY, so if you can get him to tkae a bit more at each feed that should help extend the feeds at night too.

If he takes a good dreamfeed you can try resettleing at the 1.15 wake up to see if you can stretch him a bit which will push the next feed a bit. It's a tricky choice though because if he is truly hungry he won't settle for long and you will have wasted valuable sleep time! He's still quite little so he will go longer stretches soon, especially when he can take a bit more at each feed during the day.

What do you think?

Well we recently switched to a bigger nipple, didn't seem to make much of a difference in the amount he takes. I tried to increase his feeds during the day but it just makes him spit up more than he usually does, which is quite a lot already. He has been taking less at the 1am feed over the past few nights, now only taking 2-3 oz so I am thinking about trying to shh pat him back to sleep or maybe give him a paci. Dad is better at shhh patting so I might wait until the weekend so that he can do it  :) I'll ask him and see what he thinks. One thing I don't understand, if it's not hunger should I shh pat or do wake to sleep? Try one for a few nights and if it doesn't work try the other? I hate to sound desperate but when he wakes up every 3 hours and takes up to an hour to go back down, I'm only getting 2 to 2.5 hours of sleep at a time! I expected that at the newborn stage but not at 3 months.
