what can you hide prunes in??
« on: April 17, 2011, 18:42:37 pm »
i have a very constipated and very picky eater (who is also teething and therefor further off her food).  i am trying to get her to drink water and eat foods that make you poop (prunes, pears fruit) but she just flat out refuses.  any ideas for hiding these foods in something she will eat?  i thought maybe i could make a frozen popsicle with prunes in it but not sure what to blend the prunes with.  she is in such pain when she poops and usually cries and gets upset and her poop is so hard, must really hurt.  i never had this issue with dd1, not sure what to do!

Have you tried tinned prunes - IMHO they are SO much nicer than dried ones!  They are much softer and sweeter (even if just tinned in juice) and lovely mixed in with yoghurt.  Dried apricots have more fibre than prunes - would she eat those?
Also, prune juice diluted with water is guzzled down by DS, that might be worth a shot - or made into popsicles?

Would she drink freshly squeezed oj? This is great for making you go ;)
Or any freshly squeezed smoothie for that matter.

Apple, pear and prune steamed/boiled together is a lovely sweet dessert - mush it up well like a puree and eat it warm with custard, or cold with icecream or make a crumble topping and have it warm or cold.

For a popsicle I would stew dried prunes and dried apricots together for a few minutes, puree them, and then mix that with OJ to make a pouring consistency. OJ is laxative too, so the combo should be good!

Kiwifruit are also fantastic laxative fruits.  They make fantastic popsicles

thanks everyone!   i did not know OJ was such a good laxitive.  i will have to head off the the store today to get some of these things. also have not tried bought prune juice yet, so will try that.
i have been stewing them (i think this is the same as tinned?) and trying to make smoothies and mix with yogurt etc but she turns her nose up.  she will not touch a dried one.
i had a bit more succes today with a very thin and smooth smoothy, maybe she likes more consistancy of milk rather than a thick one.  she drank about half a cup, but it only had 1 prune in it, so only drank half a prune but she liked it so maybe i can try it again with more prunes snuck in :-\ i will try the OJ smoothy idea once i get some OJ, i think that would be thinner consistency
i did this afternoon make prune pops with bluberries (to hide the taste and color) and i think they will be pretty good.
all these ideas are great, i  will try and see how it goes.
thanks!!
my MIL sent me a recipe for prune cookies and they are in the oven now, we'll see...

Oooo!   Sounds delicious!  If I didn't have NO issues with poop myself, I'd keep that in mind for myself!!;D

so the prune and bluberry popsicle was a big hit and the prune cookies were also gobbled up by both girls  ;D ... and dh   ::)  tonight i pureed some fresh squeezed OJ with prunes and prune juice and poured it over a bowl of mandarin oranges and she ate the whole bowl and drank all the juice.  so hopefully that gets things going, still no poop today  :(

Ugh....btdt....(((hugs)))  IMO the best way to give prunes is the baby-food kind. Like Gerber or Beech Nut. I would mix with baby food pears, or a cup of applesauce....delicious!  Or at least my lo thought so!

Give her small - medium amounts of prunes etc every day for a number of days here.  Once she gets more regular and her poop isn't hard, then you can tinker with how much keeps things ok.
When DS2 was little, we had to give him prunes at least once a day or he got constipated related to his reflux).  As he got older the issue went away.

Kiwifruit are used by the hospitals in Chch to help patients prevent constipation due to the pain meds they take.  There is a company that makes Kiwifruit slushies.  We had a standing order to give everyone who would drink it (and it was really nice!) 1 cup a day.
The problem I have now though is that Kiwifruit are so very expensive it seems wrong to put them in a slushie! ::)  Thankfully the boys like them cut up so it's moot point. :D
