Waking and crying hysterically
« on: April 20, 2011, 21:16:00 pm »
Hi

After using PU/PD to stop my five month old sleep has really improved.  He generally goes to bed at 7:30 and wakes between 10:30 and 11:00 for a feed.  He goes back to sleep with no problem and generally sleeps until 7 am unless he's bothered by a wet nappy (if he wakes for a change he usually goes back to sleep easily).

Occasionally I hear him waking and settling back to sleep, sometimes after a mantra cry or a whinge, so I know he can self settle.  My problem is that recently he's started waking occasionally at about 9pm ish and cries hysterically.  Ssh/pat doesn't work and if I try to pick him up he gets even worse.  The only thing I can use to settle is to put him under his mobile - it basically seems to distract him from crying and he'll fall to sleep under it.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this, there's no signs of teething and he's feeding well.  I'm worried about the mobile becoming a prop but can't seem to calm him any other way.  He naps fairly well during the day and is on a four hour EASY.

Thanks in advance.

This is the sort of routine that you are looking at with a 5 month old.

7:00 - wake and feed
7:30-9:15 - Activity
9:30-11 - nap
11:00 - wake and feed
11:30-12:45 - Activity
1/1:30-3 - nap
3:00-feed
3:30-4:45 - Activity
5-5:45 - catnap
6:30 bath and feed
7:00 - bedtime
10:00 - Dream Feed

You may want to start pushing the A time a bit to 2.30h.

The screaming can be that she is not tired enough so maybe try and adjust the A time.  I can remember my LO going through the same thing, so it may just be a phase that he is going through.

Good luck and keep us posted  :-*

Thanks.  The last couple of days he's being increasing his A time a bit and we had no screaming yesterday evening.  I'll let you know how it goes!
