Help...things are getting out of hand.
« on: April 24, 2011, 20:11:28 pm »
Logan is 9 months and was sleeping through, untill last week. We had dropped the nightfeeds and then after a couple of nights he was STTN. Last saturday we had the worst night ever, out of the blue he woke up and would not go back to sleep....I even tried feeding him :-[ he won't take it and he just screamed and screamed.
Since then he is up ever few hours every night and will not go back to sleep, at first I thougt it might be a growth spurt as he wanted feeds again....but even feeding him won't put him backt o sleep. I have given pain meds as I know he is teething but that isn't helping. I am at my wits end...dh and I are very tired. We are having some problems and this is just adding a huge strain on our relationship!!
I am starting to hate nights!!

hey there sorry its gotten so rough, do you think he has an ear infection?

Also have you tried comforting AP him in another room. With DS2 since we have started sleept training I have noticed almosta  room aversionand he thinks everytime i take him to his room its for sleep and he gets mad and upset. In the middle of the night, (we have been having a rough few nights as well) if I ahve to AP i take him downstairs..and its faster.

Hi Kim,

Hugs to you.  What does your routine look like? My initial thought is that maybe it's developmental because my DS did the same exact thing around the time he turned 9 months.  It could also be teething -- when are you giving him his pain meds?

Hugs Kim! My first thought is the teeth; even when medicated, those buggers can still hurt and cause issues. My second thought is his A times... how long are they right now? Whenever Nathan needed a tweak, his nights went to pot because he was UT and/or OT.

How long is he up for when he wakes in the night?

I would stop feeding him when he wakes up, since you are pretty sure he isn't waking from hunger. You don't want him to start to expect that feed and wake up for it if he isn't already! I would also watch for signs of illness or an ear infection.

It's funny you should mention ear infection as that was one of my first thoughts. He isn't showing any signs though so I really don't think it is. He is going to the dr on thursday for a check up so they will give him a once over. He is teething I can see four teeth trying to get through, I do give  him pain meds but he is still waking.

Last night he woke at 12:00 and I fed him :-[ then he was up at 2:00 and screamed and screamed untill about 4:00am. When he is upset he won't even let me hold him he fights me and twists and turns, screaming. It makes me cry as I feel like I can't even calm him down.  I stayed with him the entire time, dh finally took over around 3:30 as I was crying.

His days look like this:

7:00 wake bottle
8:00 breakfast
10:00-10:45 nap
11:00 bottle
12:00 lunch
2:00-2:45nap
3:00 bottle
5:30 dinner
He has a little cap nap after he eats

Sorry had to start a new post as it was "jumping"
He has a 20 min cat nap after he eats.

7:00 bottle and in bed
He goes to sleep great at bedtime, but then his NW start around 10;30.

Today was different as he didn't wake  till 8am as he was up so much last night. We also skipped the am nap as we went swimming. We got home at 12:00 so instead of lunch I gave him a bottle and put him down to nap as he had fallen asleep in the car. He woke at the 45 min mark and let out one scream but i didn't go in and he must of went back to sleep because I don't hear him.....so he has been asleep for about 1.5 hrs.....

Good boy with a longer nap today! That should help things a bit. His bad nights and those 45 min naps have probably made him OT, which makes the nights even worse than teething alone.

I would say that based on your routine it might be time to stretch those A times out a bit, especially the first one. He is probably short napping because he has only been awake for 3 hrs so goes down UT. At 9 months he "should" (of course, each babe is unique) be able to do about 3.5 hrs A time. If you tweak his routine, I really think that it will even out his nights. It might not fix things right away because teething is such a factor, but it should help. Poor monkey, cutting 4 at once! Ouch.

Don't feel bad if you have to feed him; don't feel bad about using APOP to get through this. You will get back on track. I have BTDT with Nathan, and I know how hard it is to try so hard to settle your LO at night when they just will.not.stop. crying! There is zero point in trying to start sleep training when they are ill or teething, so just tweak his routine a bit and do what you have to do until he feels better. Then you can fix any bad habits that have sprung up.

So he ended up having a 3 hour nap :o :o He woke at 3:30 and I fed him his dinner early at 4:00.  I think I am going to aim on getting him to bed around 6:30. I didn't know at this age he should be doing 3.5 hours A time......good to know!! Your right I do need to tweek his routine!!
Thanks
