« on: April 26, 2011, 04:06:27 am »
Some of u may bw aware of some surgery i had when ds2 was born recently. Well in the next 6 weeks i will need  to be seen at least as a day case for 2 follow up procedures. My question is what can i do to onsure ds can get bm while someone else cares for him without affecting latch? Thanks

Congratulations on your new little man and {{HUGS}} for what you went through.

This is a breastfeeding question really so I will move you over to the breastfeeding board where there are more experienced eyes for you!

((((hugs)))) he may be OK with the occasional bottle... Stan was given a bottle for 24 hours while having jaundice treatment at 7 days old, but it didn't affect his BF latch at all. I'm sure there are 'breast mimicking' bottles and teats available, just had a quick search, things like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Breastflow-Stage-1-Teat-2-Pack/dp/B000UGVHMO/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1303817795&sr=8-11

Hugs and congratulations!
I would also suggest giving a bottle like that. Perhaps ask in Product recommendations for tips on breast mimicing bottles and what's worked for others?
There are also ways of bottle feeding a BF infant to as much as possible prevent bottle preference problems. See info here: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/bottle-feeding.html
You could start pumping and freezing whenever really. Then you know there's mummy milk for him whenever you have to be away :)

Hiya!!! Congrats on the baby!
The best way would be if the person would be willing to feed from a cup - I've seen the midwives in hospital do it with DD when she was born (long story, but her sugar was low and she had to be topped up) It's amazing how they can guzzle it down.

Ah yeah, cup feeding is a good alternative! Why didn't I think of that ::) It may be harder once baby is a little older and taking larger quantities, but definitely the best way in the early days :)

Sorry meant to post there.  thanks will start expressing when i am discharged. Will look into bottle options. Should i start giving a daily bottle to get him used to it or avoid too many and just check will take 1? He was cup fed while i was in theatre but by 6wks maybe the amount will be too much?
