RPAH/Failsafe Elimination Diet and Peas
« on: May 04, 2011, 07:10:37 am »

After DS2's 3rd failed attempt at 1tsp peas which are listed as Moderate Salicylates... dietician informs me that they are mistaking listed as 'S' (salicylates) in the handbook and should really read 'G' (glutamates).

Could be why we keep failing to increase his Sals...

We will be doing a 'proper' challenge of Glutamates soon with parmessan cheese (he is MSPI, so cant do soy sauce or soy products but he's tolerating yoghurt and hard yellow cheese atm hence the choice of parmessan).

Just thought I'd share for anyone else doing this :-*

Sorry - so are you saying peas are bad then? I'm EFB and trying this diet and I do peas. Should I not?

no not 'bad', just that they are meant to be listed in the guidebook as moderate 'g' (glutamate), rather than moderate 's' (salicylate).

if you are bf then it is usually recommended to stick to lows and include moderates too as otherwise it is too restrictive to maintain and may need supplements. (which would mean keeping peas is fine)

however when you start your LO on solids, consider peas as a glutamate rather than a salicylate (as they are actually really really low in sals).

does that makes sense?

It does, yes. Thank you!

Where do you get a list of low glutamate and amine foods? Is there one in the handbook? all I ever find is a list of sals...

No, I don't have it. It's a real shame. Asked hubby to order it and it's gonna take a good few weeks before I get it. Would really need it now as it's such a crucial time but will have to wait.
Does it have a list of glutamates and amines too?

yes, it groups food by category (eg. fruits, vegetables, etc) and then sorts them in order of low, moderate, high and very high chemicals. then next to each food is a code s (salicylate), g (glutamate) or a (amine). if you scroll down the link, it has an eg of the fruits list on there. i tried to find the charts i used to use from the net but they have pulled them down for copyright reasons sorry!

just quickly, I have a very sick baby  :(

plant poisions and rotten stuff has moved to here, the Swain 1985 lists are here.  Unforuntate that they don't release the updated lists outside the RPAH booklet.
