trail mix
« on: May 13, 2011, 04:33:05 am »
I was hoping to get some ideas for trail mix combo-nations.  Does anyone have one their LO likes?  homemade? or store bought?

There is a bit of an international suggestion that whole nuts be avoided in LO's under 5ish due to high choking risk.   The LO's small airway and poor chewing and swallowing ability all increase the risk of choking.

Here's some links of info re choking in children.

Were you thinking of trail-mix without nuts?

I suppose you could make something with dried fruit and cereals, e.g. raisins, chopped up dried apricots, cheerios?  Anyone got any more suggestions?
Here's my blog which is focussed on simple food for babies, toddlers and families http://mamacook.blogspot.com/

We use nuts in trail mix, I just chop/smash them up so they are small.  I use raisins, dried cranberries, chopped dates, chopped prunes, chopped nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts), sesame seed pretzels, a very few chocolate chips (keeps DS excited to find them!), some cereal (cheerio style cereals), sunflower seeds (out of shell) and coconut flakes.  I just grab small handfuls of whatever of these are in the cupboard, toss them all into a bowl with a lid, give it a shake and it's done!

Oooo thanks Mashi.  I love the idea of using coconut flakes!!!
I'm not sure if DD would eat nuts.  I've never tried.  However, she loves cranberries.

It is another reason I smash them up - he eats them without knowing!!!  Nuts are so healthy and he is fussy on nut butters (loves them one day, hates them the next) but when smashed in tiny pieces he does not notice them!  To crush them you can put them between wax paper or in a zipper bag and whack them with a kitchen mallet or rolling pin or heavy plate until they are tiny!

The other thing I would caution about with trail mix type things is that you make sure your LO is sitting down to eat any of the foods mentioned as options so far.  Dried fruits, coconut or any nuts will not dissolve.  If your LO is walking around eating and inhales the food product, it may lodge in a tiny portion of their airway causing suffocation.  The dried cereals do eventually dissolve, but it really isn't worth the risk.
I know I sound like a worry wart :-[  ::) but choking on these foods is totally preventable potential accident that I wouldn't wish on any parent.
Off my soap box now. ;)
