Tips please for a reluctant hair washer aged 2!
« on: May 16, 2011, 09:48:09 am »
I had no idea where to post this thread so here goes-

My DD is very nearly 2 and over the last, say, 4-6mths she's really started a strong dislike of having her hair washed, so much so I only wash it once a week now because she gets so upset. We've tried every single technique under the sun including-

sharing baths with parents
sharing baths with big brother age 7
encouraging her to wash our hair
using the shower
using a jug to wet the hair
using a rubber visor/face shield
bribes with chocolate (!)
lying her down on her back in a shallow bath
etc etc

If we wash her hair first, she's just had enough and is less keen to stay in for a bit and play so we tend to try and have a play first then do the hair washing.

I just hoped you could perhaps offer me some advice or share some tips to help us. We have no idea if it's the water on the face or water in her ears that she's grown a dislike for as she just gets so upset and puts her hands in her face.

Thank you in advance!

My DS is like this too. He totally freaks out and no talking or explaining or bribes makes him any happier about it. I'm ashamed to say we go weeks without washing his hair as it's so traumatic for him and me - though you wouldn't know it - his hair never looks dirty.

No tips from me, just get it done as quickly as possible.

BTW - he's now 3 and he's just started swimming lessons. During the first lesson, his head went under and I thought he'd freak. He did get a little tearful but was fine and the proceeded to put his own head under and GET IN THE SHOWER!!!!!! which he's never done before. I hoping this is the beginning of him being OK about getting his head wet. So, perhaps taking her swimming and doing the hair washing in the shower afterwards might be the way to go with your DD???

Both of our munchkins have become anxious about washing their hair.
We tried avoiding washing hair, but it became worse as it built the anxiety in between washings. So we went the other way, we washed it every day until they learnt it was ok, and they calmed down.
In all honesty it worked after about 2-3 days!  They came to realise it wasn't scary.  They were both a bit older than your LO, DS nearly 3 and DD was probably the same age.

Yes I agree with you there, I think perhaps reverse psychology would help!
Thanks!
