MOving siblings into same room..help!
« on: May 25, 2011, 02:54:35 am »
Hi there
We have a new bub due in August so are keen to move our two boys into the same room (giving baby their own room).  Our boys are 3 (in his own big bed) and 1 (in his cot which he will remain in).

Have you got any ideas on how to make the transition a whole lot less painful (on us)....? What's the best way to go about doing this?  Thinking we will do it soon....

Thanks heaps

Not sure if i will be much help but I moved dd into ds room when she was 6 months.
I told ds that it was his job to mind dd when she was sleeping. I stagger their bed times and nap times. Dd naps about 2.30 and ds naps at 1 - 2 bed time dd goes at 6.30 and ds goes around 7.15.
We do stories with ds in my bed and then carry him into his room. We leave his blanket in his bed so that he doesn't get too comfy in my bed during story time lol
Give it a week they will get used to each others noises! Good licks

My boys are almost the same age and I keep wondering when would be a good time to put them together.  TBH, I have no idea how it might go, but I think that they would just get used to each other!

Maybe one weekend you can try a 'sleepover' in one of their rooms, to see how it goes?  Do you have a pack n play that you can put in your older child's room for the 1yo to try sleeping in?

I would definitely try to make the transition soon so that they have lots of time to get used to it before the baby comes  Maybe spend some time talking to them about it, especially the older child.  And also make it a special space for both of them, and keep their bedtime routines consistent while doing the transition.

We moved DD in with DS when she was nearly 9 months and he was just over 3. They have always done the bath and bed routine together so we just moved her cot in and put them to bed at the same time. They have been very good from the start, a little unsettled for the first night or so but it didn't take long for them to get used to each other. They don't ever seem to wake each other, even her shouting for us very loudly doesn't wake him!

We have just moved beds around too, he has had a new full size single and she has come out of the cot into his toddler bed and they have adapted straight away!

We moved DD at about 19 months into DS1's room--he was 4 at the time.  I took DS away for the weekend.  While I was gone with DS, DH moved DD's crib into DS's bedroom and started putting her to bed there.  This gave her a few days to adjust to falling asleep in the new room by herself.  Then when I got home with DS, we put them to bed at the same time.  Cute conversations on the monitor!  :)

Overall it's gone very well.  Having DD in the room helped DS with some fear of the dark stuff.  We have a bit of trouble at time (like right now) when they need different length nights.

Thanks everyone.  Guess I'm just concerned they will be too excited and wake each other up.  I'm comfortable with staggering bed times etc or doing what is needed but just concerned about my very defiant and spirited 3year old.  I'm concerned he may even climb into the cot and both LO.  I don't know, just nervous!

I think you can expect excitement in the beginning, but that they will settle down eventually.  Any new change will be exciting for them!  Can you talk to your 3yo about why it's not safe to climb into the cot, and he must stay in his bed?
