possible dairy intolerance
« on: May 30, 2011, 00:45:12 am »
Hi, my reflux daughter seems to be doing alright.  She is feeling good and can eat food such as breads with dairy baked into them.  When she has a good amount of cheese she becomes a terror.

She is 9.5 months old
I am just wondering how I can wean her off breast milk?  She has started taking a bit of water, it has been a hard road and I really hate pumping and I have to go back to work in a few months.  I don't think formula will work because of the dairy.  Can I use almond milk or rice milk?  I would like to do this maybe once every few days for now.

also, should I try yogurt or assume that it will bother her also?

Hi you can certainly start to introduce an alternative milk at this stage although you would need to continue to bf for a while longer. Personally I would steer clear of yoghurt at the moment. Is she ok with soy? Are you seeing a dietician?

thank you!

I haven't seen anyone.  I don't even know where to find a dietician that is good with kids.  My Dr insists that it is rare that breastfed babies have milk issues so he hasn't set me up with anyone.  :(

I am finding this all very hard to deal with. I feel so alone with all of it.  Thank goodness I have this site, it's the only thing that keeps me from losing my mind when it comes to my daughter.

I have an appointment tomorrow to discuss my DD's meds. Since she is finally feeling better I am going start discussing the dairy issue more forcefully.

I guess I'll try some almond milk as she seems fine with nuts.

I'd be wary of almond milk. It's REALLY low in good fats and calories and very thin. And the thinness could aggravate her reflux too. I'd go to hypo-allergenic formula for now (if you are going to wean off BF), TBH...

It's not that I want to wean yet but I want her to be able to start having something else so that she will be okay when she hits one and I go back to work.  Right now she wont take anything but breastmilk, not even water, and it's really hard for me.  I just want to start getting her use to something else and I want her to be okay if I leave for a the evening and someone need to give her one bottle.  I have been pumping but it's getting really hard and I figure since I'm going back to work and she'll be off breastmilk in 3 more months I'd like to start supplementing with something once in a while.

I think it might be hard to get her to take a hypoallergenic formula at this point.  They taste awful.  DD was on Nutramigen and now is on Neocate and they are horrid tasting.  Maybe try rice milk or coconut milk.  There is a thread somewhere on this board about how to make up a "milk" with the calories needed.  I'll see if I can find it and post the link.

Here it is.  i think I'll try it as well.  I'd like to get DD drinking something other than formula.  She is much more interested in chewing on her sippy cup rather than drinking from it.  She has a lot of fun with it but of course I have to hold it the whole time.  Maybe if it had something in it other than water she might like it better :)

Hi have you tried a variety of cups?? Have you tried putting EBF in them as she may want to drink out of them then!!

We use calcium enriched oat milk which is a nice texture and taste.

I've tried a bunch of sippy cups.  we finally figured out this weekend that she will take water if I put it in a straw and hold the water in by holding my thumb on the top of the straw, she then puts the bottom in her mouth and kinda sucks while I let go a bit!  We were out and it was hot so we tried and she took it. I'm not going to start looking for a good sippy with a straw.  She will take a bottle with Breastmilk but nothing else, one she tastes that it is not breastmilk she plays with it.

I've never heard of oat milk, where do I get that?

I'll also check out that link and see what I can do. Thanks

Oliver takes Neocate fine - in UK it is prescription only.  I would go back to doctor to get referral to dietician.

Right now we're working on referrals to a GI specialist and a allergist.  My next move will be to find a dietician.

I really dont think I need formula though as it is just something I want to give every once in a while so I can go out without her and in a few months she wont need breastmilk or formula anyway.

Yea if it's only for once in a while now I'd think rice milk with added coconut milk (for good fats) would be a good and yummy option.

 Hi hon,

I just wanted to add a little something about rice milk. I know you are not in the UK but the guidelines here are that it is not to be given to LO's under 5 due to the arsenic content.

There is a link at the bottom of this page.

we were told not to give oat milk as a main drink as it isn't high in fat - but since Murray has had no weight gain issues and eats (really!!) well, dietician was fine with it .... if you are continuing to breastfeed it isn't an issue

I didn't realize this was going to be such a hard problem to solve!

I have never heard of oat milk?  Is it available for you at regular supermarkets or do you have to go to some sort of speciality store?
