When EBTs backfire? Suggestions?
« on: May 30, 2011, 12:49:44 pm »
Quick background...

We tried the 2-1 transition 5 mos ago and it went poorly so I found myself on this site.  I was given the suggestion to go back to 2 naps and do a AM catnap and then longer PM nap.  This worked for about 5-6 weeks but now DS is about 15 mos. and has been ready again for the 2-1 switch.  We have been transitioning for about a week now and the schedule did look like this:

Wake 6:30/6:45am
Nap 12-2pm
BT 6:45pm (asleep by 7pm)

Now if he has a short nap, we put him to bed closer to 6:15pm (asleep by 6:30pm)  and while he does clock about 12 hours ON, he tends to wake earlier (6:15ish).  This makes it tough to get to the noon nap.  Will this all work itself out as we fully make the 2-1 switch?  Should we stick with the 7pm BT no matter what time he wakes from the nap?  Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi there, normally the nap elongates but if he's doing such a long night it's hard to say.  So I would aim to move bedtime out slowly.  Tack on 10 mins or so every few days then adjust as needed.  If you get him doing 7-6 with a decent nap that's reasonable sleep for his age.  If he's prone to 12 hr nights then he may be higher sleep needs.  What does your ideal day look like ie what time do you want/need him to wake?
The tweaking never stops!

He's prone to a little more than 11 hours ON.  Ideally I'd love the day to be something like this:

Wake 7am or so
Nap 12:30-2:30 or later
BT 7:30pm

How does he handle OT?  I would stick to the 7pm bedtime, but that is JMO.  That is what we did with DS2, bedtime never earlier than 7 and usually 7:30 even during the 2-1.  Our day now is pretty much what you are aiming for.  DS2 handled OT really well though, so we just worked through it.

DS gets cranky and tough to manage but he's not terrible.  I think we need to stick to the 7pm BT, if not a little later.  I was just looking at DDs schedule at 15 mos. and she made the 2-1 transition at 12.5/13mos and by 15 mos she was doing 8-6:45/7am and naps from 12-2pm (so she did have a long WT before BT, she also could do without a nap and be the same happy child).
