Do babies stop jolting?
« on: June 01, 2011, 23:27:37 pm »
Is there a time when babies stop jolting? I've been observing my DS lately and haven't noticed him jolting as much. I'm currently in his nursery and put him down almost 30 minutes ago and no jolts.

I have found that as Dylan has gotten older he jolts much less. In fact, he really only jolts now if he's really OT.

Yes, it's the Moro reflex. I think they outgrow it around 3-4 months, bit I can't remember exactly. It's pretty amazing, actually. It's the same reflex baby monkeys use to cling to their mother's backs.

Sorry, I thought you meant jolting as in holding through the jolts when lo is falling asleep :) That is different from the Moro reflex and even happens to adults at times!

I was talking about the jolts at the 10 and 20 mark.

Ok, that's what I thought by your description! :) As time went on Dylan did seem to grow out of those jolts, but like I said if he's OT he'll even jolt now at nearly 30mo. (the benefit to taking the time to teach independent sleep though, I don't have to do anything to help ;))

My DS outgrew the 30 min jolts around 6 months :)

Spencer still jolts! Not that I have to help her through them anymore, but one night she was unsettled at bedtime and I laid with her and she jolts as she falls asleep.  In fact, I still jolt the odd time too, maybe once every week or two as I am falling asleep.
