8 week old---3 or 4 hour EASY
« on: June 03, 2011, 19:56:55 pm »
HI, My newest addition is 8 weeks old and we have been doing 3 hour EASY, but he sometimes doesn't seem to be hungry at the 3 hour mark. When should I switch him from 3 hours to 4 hours for feedings during the day. Right now he is sleeping pretty well at night, DF at 11:00 and sleeps until 4 or 4:30 am. Thanks for any advice!  :)

Generally, the change is around 4 months ;)  How much is he taking at each feed now?

I found that once DD was on a good routine, she never really showed hunger cues... she knew that food was coming and she would be fine... and would eat when it was offered.  Could just be that your DS is adjusting nicely and knows that food will soon be offered.

Great night sleep for a newbie!

Bottle fed babies do often get to a 4 hour EASY before a breastfed baby, and often need to go to 3.5 hours before 4 hours. The problem is they aren't able to do the A times until they are around 4 months so you run into problems like feed times falling in the middle of sleep times if you push the feed times too soon.

I agree with PP on the night sleep - that's fab and the day calories from the 3 hour EASY are probably helping that, so I'd stick with it for a while yet! Also remember that he won't always take the same amount at each feed, that's quite normal!

Absolutely agree with Laura - we had major issues with feed times in the middle of sleep times for a while... the 3 1/2 hour EASY is a tricky one!

Thanks all for your replies! He generally takes between 3.5-4.5 ounces at each feeding. We'll continue to stick with the 3 hours for now, I don't want to mess up his night sleep :)

That is a small amount for his age... he should be closer to 5 or 6 ozs now.  How much does he weigh?  Could be that you just need to push him a little longer after he takes a decent bottle to get him on the right path ;)

Really? 5-6 ounces is what an 8 week old should get? I tried upping my 8 week old to 4.5 or 5 and she spit up everywhere. She's almost 10 pounds too so average for her age. She eats every 3 hours, sometimes 2 1/2 if she doesn't take a full 4ounces the feeding before.

It really depends on the baby, but a general guideline is 4 ozs by 4 weeks and up from there.  I have a small eater as well... she was only at 3 1/2 ozs at one month and took until 3 months to get to 5 ozs.

He weighs a little over 10lbs. Actually the last couple of days he's been taking a solid 4 ounces and occasionally will take 5 ounces. Do you mean trying to push him to longer times in between, like 3.5 hours instead of 3?

That's exactly what I mean :)  I found that DD was ready for a longer time between feeds when she suddenly seemed to not finish her bottles... her body was maturing and she didn't need to eat as frequently and she just wasn't hungry yet!  Increased the time between feeds and she would be fine again :)
