Please help dd not eating well for a few weeks now
« on: June 04, 2011, 21:24:08 pm »
My dd is 4 months and 2 weeks old now, for the past few weeks she hasn't been eating well.  We do a combo of BF and bottle feeding with pumped breastmilk.  Nothing has changed as far as the routine, the bottles and nipples I use, or my diet.  This week she was weighed and had lost a little bit of weight so now I am getting worried.

What happens is she will act hungry, drink for a few minutes and then stop... if I keep trying to persist she gets cranky and fussy and turns away from the bottle.  We were even treated for thrush "just in case" but I am positive that we didn't have it cuz of no symptoms - anyway it didn't make a difference.  This week she has now started to stop sleeping through the night and wakes up once to eat because she IS hungry after the day.  She used to take in about 750 mL a day (she is tiny at 4 months she is only 11 lbs) but now about 550 to 600 mL.  I am not sure what could be going on with her!?!  Any ideas??

Could she be teething...my dd cut her first two teeth at 4 months and she was doing pretty much what you are describing now.....I could be totally wrong here, just putting it out there.....hope you get to the bottom of it soon..

I wondered that myself but haven't noticed anything in her mouth - although this is my first baby and I have to admit I have no idea what to look for!

Can you post your routine in terms of

Eat - what times, bottle or breast - how much from the bottle, how long when she breastfeeds
Activity - how long for
Sleep - what times and how long for

That will give us the whole picture so we can see if anything jumps out. Does she show any signs of reflux at all http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=654.0

Ok... I think I may have figured it out - I was previously on a ridiculous schedule because she is a chronic 40 minute napper and so she was eating every 2 to 2.5 hours up until recently.  Today I have pushed it to every 3 to 3.5 hours for the most part and it made a HUGE difference - hoping this continues!  I just couldn't wrap my head around how to stretch out her feeds when she naps for 40 minutes almost every time.  She naps usually 5 times a day and I was just feeding her everytime she woke up - this worked up until she turned 4 months old and I suspect she just outgrew that need to feed that often and so was never feeling hungry and therefore not eating all of a sudden.  Today went much better and looked like this:

Awake 5:55 am
E 6:10 (BF and then 100 mL bottle of breastmilk)
S 7:02 (very restless nap - probably not enough A time)
A 7:47
E 9:00 (150 mL bottle breastmilk)
S 9:25
A 11:22
E 12:15 (160 mL bottle breastmilk)
S 1:09
A 1:45
E 3:00 (150 mL bottle breastmilk)
S 3:50
A 4:35
E 5:30 (she was hungry by then 160 mL bottle breastmilk)
bathtime @ 6:00pm
small 40 mL bottle top-up
S 6:40 pm

I realize that she is actually supposed to be eating every 4 hours probably but she has previously never taken amounts as big as today so I want to give her a chance to get used to that before increasing her amounts and decreasing the number of feeds in the day again.  She generally STTN since about 2 months as long as she eats enough during the day and she will NOT accept a DF or eat in the nihgt if she is woken - only if she wakes up naturally herself.  How long should I try this schedule before moving her to 4 hour EASY?  keep in mind that the 2 hour nap today (hoooorayyyyyyy!!!!) never usually happens.  How do I transition her when the time comes?
Thanks again!

Great news!  I was going to suggest lengthening the time between feeds.  My LO did the exact same thing at just over 4 months, scared me half to death!  I found the BW site by looking for info on feeding issues actually :)

I did the same thing as you... allowed DD a bit of time to adjust to the bigger bottles (a couple of weeks), then just started to wait longer between feeds... if she wasn't asking to be fed at 3 hours, I didn't offer ;)  It only took a few days to change her over ;)
