Breastfeeding and changing time zones
« on: June 13, 2011, 17:06:50 pm »
Hi! My husband and I are taking our 10.5 month old son from California to Singapore & Bali on Sunday and I'm kinda confused on how I adjust his nursing schedule to the major time zone shift.  They are 16 hours ahead of us so kind of like 9 hours behind us but 1 day ahead.

I'm wondering if I am supposed to go onto the new time zone "schedule" as soon as we start flying or once we get there? Also, how does it fit in with the fact that i'm supposed to nurse him on takeoff and landing. We have 3 separate flights before we finally arrive-it's basically a 24 hour travel day. Ugh...
Also, I have a feeling I'm going to be doing a lot of nursing to sleep, etc.

If this has been answered already or I'm in the wrong forum-please direct me! Thanks!
Any other traveling with infant advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi and welcome! :)

I've not traveled so all my advice is theoretical, but I'll see if I can help :)
Here are a couple of FAQs you may not have seen:

For the nursing on take off/landing, I wouldn't worry too much.  It's just that the sucking action will help his ears during these times, so it's not necessary that he takes a full feed.

Hopefully this response bumps your post up too so some traveling moms see this and can offer some help too! xx

Hey vthatcher

we've traveled a lot and I decided long ago that the two days after a major time zone shift are all bets off, meaning just feed when he seems hungry. I just could never get my head around the time change and found it easier to just go with the flow until we had adjusted to the new time. Also, on the plane I would BF DS a lot, I mean a LOT. As it was the best way to calm him and help him sleep. I doesn't matter too much to do this over the flight and then go with the flow the next day too, you'll get back on track...(and then fly back again!)

Thank you both so much! The links and the advice to just go with it has made me feel much more at ease...I'm going to try to just go with the flow for the first few days and then pray I can get him back on "routine" for the rest of the trip! We're going for 2 weeks so he'll have lots of time to adjust hopefully.
