Formula Alternative
« on: June 17, 2011, 21:42:29 pm »
Hi,

I'm wanting to slowly add in some non-breastmilk feeds to my 9 month girl (I can't get much from pumping any more), but I don't want to use conventional formula. Anyone know of any decent formula alternatives I can use until she turns 1? I know of a friend who did almond milk and coconut milk (while adding some vitamins/supplements), but I've been warned on nut allergies for that and also heard that those milks aren't fatty enough.

Any advice would be helpful!

Thanks.

Why are you not wanting to use formula?

You baby is too young for anything but breastmilk or formula as a food. The WHO (and most medical bodies) guidance is that only breastmilk or formula are nutritionally suitable for babies as a food until they reach 1 year, after 1 year milk is a drink not a food so other suitable milks can be used. You can add cow's milk to cooking and cereal from 6 months as they are only having small amounts that way.

As PP asked - is there a reason you don't want to use formula?

You might check out this organic formula.  A mum from another thread who had concerns about the ingredients in conventional formulas was satisfied by their ingredients:  http://www.naturesone.com/

My friend is due to go back to work when her LO is 9 months and rather than substitute a BF with a FF she is going with 3 BFs and additional dairy foods in solids to make up the rest.   She doesn't want to use normal formula either.  How many milk feeds are you doing.  If you are doing 3 BFs a day and LO is well established on solids you may not need to worry too much about a different milk source.  Or are you trying to wean BFing altogether?

I give my LO ONLY Organic formula. Today there is a lot of varieties of Organic formulas and I am sure either your supermarket or the local health food store have them.

Sorry, I didn't get notified of these posts for some reason. Yes, we're working on weaning. I just don't trust regular formula (esp. after that recall of Similac because of bug parts). We finally decided to get Nature's One. We're down to two breastfeeds a day (morning and lunch) and formula for dinner and bedtime. It's working well so far and she's loving it!

Thanks for your comments!
