What would you consider a good nap for an 8 month old?
« on: June 17, 2011, 23:01:03 pm »
My 8 month old is having some long naps and they are really too long and messing up his day/nights.
He has hada lot going on with teeth and a cold etc so I am not too worried but am trying to restructure his day a little and get his new A times now the worst is over.

He currently has 2 naps a day. I was wondering if anything over an hour at this age is considered a good nap? Sometimes DS naps for 2 and sometimes 90. On bad days 45. But I was hoping that a1 hour nap is considered okay for this age as sometimes I need to cap his nap to stay on track for BT. If this is considered too short what is okay? He tends to be a 13-14.5 hour sleeper in a 24hr period. He is a 10.5-11hr sleeper at night but wakes happy.  ;D

hey Sara!! When Ellen was on two naps, she only ever napped 1.5 hrs. I always thought it *should* be 2 (probably b/c I wanted it to be 2 ::) ), but then I realized that 1.5 worked for her and that's all I was going to get. I think if I were you, first and foremost, I'd do whatever worked to get him a good night's sleep, even if that meant two 1hr naps.

But also, the naps don't have to be equal. If he's more tired in the morning, you could let him sleep however long for that one and then cap only the second nap, or vice versa. So if he'll sleep 2hrs in the am, you could cap his afternoon nap to make sure to leave enough atime before bed, kwim?So if he needs 3 hrs before bed, you could cap his nap to never end past 4 and then put him to bed at 7. And if he short-naps in the morning for some reason, you can let him catch up on it in the afternoon. But also, they can have too much total daytime sleep. At that age, if I let Ellen sleep more than 3 hrs total during the day, she'd have NW, no matter how much atime she had before bed.

HTH!!!!

Hey Sara!  I think we are in a similar situation... naps need to be adjusted.  Alexandra seems allergic to those glorious 2 hour naps most days now... She does commonly do a 1 hr 15 or 1 hr 20 in the morning and a 1 hr 45 in the PM now.

As for how long Zac's naps "should" be - I would say that anything is fine over an hour as long as he wakes happy and is able to do a good A time after it without being to fussy ;)  And yeah, we are now capping the PM nap to preserve BT!

Hello ladies! :) Thanks for the replies.

We are having massive PM nap refusal hereand this morning I was very surprised as Zac only slept 1hr15 this morning (usually its 2 hours and I have to wake) so he was then up from 11.20ish till 3.40! He was tired too but just seems to get silly...If I put him down earlier I get 45 mins or a baby laughing in my face then screaming to come out.

I do think maybe if I get a good AM I should just put him down earlier and go for that 45pm and a shorter A to bed as this does seem to work better than this nap refusal then OT business. Also its getting so late in the day if he naps over 45 mins he wont want bed either lol.

He likes a shortish A first up 3hrs 10-15ish. But with this mega long second A he is having it is ruining our day! I did think of capping the AM short so he would be more tired for his PM nap...but I think this will backfire. ::)

Megan - I think you are right re how much day sleep he is getting. At the moment I am horrified he is getting less than 3, but I think he actually sleeps better at night with this. I do also think if he likes a long AM why mess with it...but will this get tough for the 2-1?

Kara - Im glad you agree that 1 hour + is okay if he wakes happy. :) Its just so hard to get this clear in my head after him needing so much more sleep when he was younger (and all that extending lol)

Sara - I also agree that 1hr is enough if it works to get good nights and he's happy during the day.

Also, I personally think that anything over 3 hrs a day at that age is a very high sleep needs baby, but maybe that's just b/c Ellen never could handle more than 3. I did long am/short pm for the 2-1 and it worked until the very bitter end when I reversed it b/c I just couldn't apop a nap in the afternoons anymore. So I'd get the longest nap I could in the morning and then cap the afternoon nap to 20 min (or longer if the am nap was too short). Then toward the end though (the last few weeks to a month), she wouldn't ever go down for that pm nap no matter how hard I apopped b/c she was a much better sleeper in the morning. So then I'd apop a 20 min nap as early as I possibly could in the morning and then give her almost a full atime before her 2nd nap, and then a full atime to bed. But if you cap the am nap to get a better pm nap, IME that am nap has to be super duper short (as I said, I did 20 min) or it will probably backfire.

HTH!!

Hmmm.  I thought I was alone with my DD wanting an hour to an hour and a half max at either nap.  I'm working on two a day and some days its a real struggle to not have that silly CN.  It is making early betimes and of course EWs :(  Don't mean to hijack but how long did it take to get your LOs out of the CN?

ellen was on 2 naps by 6mo. Her atimes were 3/315/315. What I found really helped with dropping the CN (for both 3-2 and 2-1) are 20 min CNs. This way, they can make it to bedtime without OT, but they don't fight bedtime and often don't even need a full atime before bed. Can you try just extending your DDs first two atimes by 15 minutes?

LOL yesterday wasnt quite so great, but still better than before and no nap refusals. Hoping today is a bit better with a tad more day sleep as yesterday he only had 2hrs10 day sleep and I think he needs about 2.5hrs!

Okay so yesterday we had a 1.5hr nap (which I woke him from) and a 1hr25min nap which he woke from himself and he slept 11 1/4 hours with only one waking at 8.45 because he was 'stuck in the corner of his cot' lol The problem I get is when he has a good night like this there aren't enough hours for him to get the 3 hours which maybe he needs to have a more settled night sleep.

Im going to keep plodding along with this one though as I think we are definitely getting there :) (slowly)

Absolutely... I am going to try capping the AM nap only for a few days at 1 hr 30.
