Overnight change to sleep
« on: June 20, 2011, 03:20:14 am »
Suddenly DS doesnt want me to put him to bed.

Normally I would feed M then lay him in his crib for naps and BT never had a problem until last night. He is teething but is medicated. Last night when I tried to lay him down he screamed for me to pick him up. I tried to comfort in his crib but he wouldnt have any part of it. So I picked him up, calmed him and laid him back down. Then the screaming started right back up. Anyway, last night I ended up rocking him to sleep as I dont believe babies should scream. ( I feel there is always a gentler approach and a reason for the screaming) So this morning for his AM nap we went through the same thing. Screaming when I put him down, try to comfort in crib, pu/pd,pu/pd finally rocked to sleep. His PM nap was no problem, he went right to sleep. Then tonight same problem as this morning. Screaming when I put him down, try to comfort in crib,pu/pd BUT this time I was getting frustrated so I turned his lamp on, (he usually needs pitch black to sleep) and handed him a 4oz bottle then I left the room to watch him on the monitor and calm myself. Well he drank 1/2 the bottle and then set it down. So I sneaked in and removed the bottle without him seeing me, but I left the lamp on. About 5 minutes later he rolled over and went to sleep without a peep. Any suggestions as to what could be going on? His EASY for today is as follows...

Wake 7:00
Nap #1 tried to put down at usual time of 10:30 after the AP'ing he fell asleep at 11:00 (woke him at 1.5hrs)
Nap #2 4:00 He usually goes down at 3:30 but AM nap put this one back 30 minutes (woke him at 1.5hrs)
Bedtime Tried for 8:30 (usually 8 but 30 min later due to am nap, finally went to sleep at 9:00)

He has been sleeping around 11 hours at night so as you can see, today ended up an hour too long. He has never fought sleep before and he does not act like its pain bothering him, he just doesnt want me to put him to bed.

Just following along... we are in the same situation.  Mine finally fell asleep at 825 after rocking her for 45 minutes.  I also had to walk away for a few minutes to gather my thoughts... DD was such a great independent sleeper and is now a total nightmare :(

They are developing object permanence at this age.  SO they now understand that when you leave, you are still around, somewhere out there.  Before this they figured you didn't exist outside of their view.  It's a very tough age because they are getting so mobile, and teething, and eating solids and it's all very overwhelming because they start to realize that they are not a part of you, they are separate.

We always had huge sleep regressions during teething, rocking and shush/patting even into the second year.  Sleep isn't linear, there's a lot of twists and turns.

This may help you ladies:

Thank you Wendy, the thing is M didnt end up OT either time that he stayed awake an extra 30 minutes. IE..His morning nap is always at 10:30 but he didnt go to sleep until 11:00 but he still slept for 1.5hours like always. Then BT he had an A of 3.5 before it when he usually only has 3hr A. And I think he actually slept better. We still had 2 NW's which is better than the 3 we have been getting, and the first may have been caused by my older son. And now that I typed that all out I realize I should probably post on the easy board but thank you very much for reading

Hi NanaC, did you see my post on the 7-9 months board? We have had a complete turn around (though it is only day 2 today of our new routine) but I cut DS naps right back and he is sleeping a lot better and longer at night. ... I think for us we were putting DS down UT and he was p*ssed off about it lol. In saying that...it is only day 2 so Ill keep you posted.

We are also going through some major SA and in the middle of a wonder week developmental leap so DS is still clingy and whiney but at least I know (I think) that this will pass.

Thanks Wendy!  You confirmed my suspicions :)  I am certain that we are dealing with SA here... just today, DD has started to scream/cry as soon as I am out of her line of sight.  And it's a sad cry... I will check the link you posted for some tips!
