Waking up 1 hour after sleep screaming.....
« on: June 20, 2011, 17:59:16 pm »
Please help me!!!   My DS is 6 months next Monday and our EASY is very messy but we have the foundation pretty good......This has been happening to me for the last 2 nights and I am worried its starting a habit.  I put him down for BT (I give him a bottle right before) and he goes down pretty good and then he is asleep for at least an hour before he wakes up screaming, I go in and try to soothe him like normal and he wont stop screaming bloody murder!!!  He gets so hysterical after 30 minutes I have to pick him up and even then he is still screaming and wont settle, then if I get him settled and go to put him down he starts screaming before I even put him down!  I had to sleep with him on my chest Saturday night and even then he wouldnt settle good, I had to keep bouncing him.  Last night after 45 minutes I had to take him out of the room, I tried rocking him in there and he was still screaming.  I then put him over my shoulder and he finally started to catch his breath....I then just took him out in the living room to compose himself until I was ready for bed.....then when I put him down for bed he was ok then after being up for an hour.  I do use a binky and usually he will just need a replug but the last 2 nights thats not the case, it doesnt help.  He goes down fine for naps and if he wakes he settles quickly!!!  Does this sound like his reflux is acting up?  My dr said I need to let him self soothe...which involves crying it out and I am sorry I cannot do that!!!

 Ha! Its only me.  ;)

OK, so as I was reading through my feeling was discomfort or OT then you mentioned the reflux thing and perhaps it could be the case. I was thinking perhaps gas from his feed. Is he doing a good burp before you get him down?

Either that or OT. WU's not long after BT are pretty indicative of OT but the fact that he is really ahrd to settle makes me wonder if pain is an issue here.

If he does it again maybe try picking him up and seeing if he's got a burp in his belly? Although I'm sure you already do that but just thinking out loud really.

Yay!!!

Actually he doesnt burp everytime....I know this is bad but sometimes he falls asleep while eating and I cannot get him to burp for the life of me so I just put him down.....when I pick him up, I would think he would burp if thats the case dont you?  I really think something is bothering him, I rarely see him cry this hard and for so long.....

It does seem like discomfort to me. Is he on meds for reflux? Perhaps the dosage needs upped? I dont know much about that stuff I'm afraid.

9 times out of ten there is a burp in there. We've all done it hon, put them down when they have fallen asleep on the boob/bottle but it pays in the longrun to keep winding until you get something out. Otherwise its hours later and the painful gas os at the other end kwim? I speak from experience of the windiest baby ever created!!  ::)

He is on Ranitidine but we just started and I think it may need to be upped.  I called today and they think he just needs to self soothe and want me to let him CIO!!! No way!!!

I will try to continue to keep trying until he burps, I am sure that is part of the problem....I know how bad it must hurt to have trapped air....

I love how they think a baby in pain/discomfort should be able to self-soothe.  Riiiight.

I would consider that perhaps he has outgrown his Zantac dose.  If he's having a really good big feed before bed then this can cause the 'flux and the waking not long after.
The tweaking never stops!
