6.5 week old getting distracted while eating?
« on: June 21, 2011, 14:12:28 pm »
My LO is 6.5 weeks old and has been on formula since about 2 weeks old. He usually takes between 4 and 5 oz. at each feeding. At night he drains a 5 oz. bottle in 20 minutes or less. But, during the day it seems like he's less hungry. He takes 3 oz. really well, but then seems to hit a wall. He looks around, flails his arms and seems generally distracted. I usually have to force the last 2 oz. down him, and by then end of the feeding, we've been at it for at least 40 minutes.

This morning, for our 7 am feeding, I tried swaddling him (I had the tv off and the room was quiet, and he still was distracted by the blinds and the fan), thinking that with less flailing he could concentrate on the last of the bottle. He took another ounce, but that's it. He was not at all interested in finishing the entire 5 oz.

I did my A time until I saw a big yawn, at which time, I swaddled him and put him down for a nap. It's been about an hour since I put him down, and he's waking up again. Is this because he isn't eating the full 5 oz. bottle or because maybe he's UT and I'm putting him down for his nap too soon. Also, I've been wondering if he might finish the entire bottle if we went to a 3.5 EASY, but since he's waking up an hour into his nap, that seems a little impossible at this point.

What is the best advice to get him to focus and eat the entire 5 oz?

He may not actually need the whole 5oz every feed, a bottle feed should be done in about 20 mins, so he could just be taking what he needs. Have you tried a faster teat with him - that could make a difference. Do you wind him every oz or so? If not try that, it could be wind stopping him from finishing his bottles.

I have tried a faster teat, but only once or twice and didn't seem to stop the flailing or general distractions. Also, I don't wind him every oz. but I try to do it at least once or twice during the feed and after he finishes.

If he doesn't take the whole 5 oz. by the end of 20 minutes and then we do our A time, and he still doesn't go 3 hours between feedings, is he UT by the time I put him down for his nap? I try to follow his cues, but maybe I need to keep him up just a little bit longer. LO is usually up for an hour total, with feedings and A time.

At 6 weeks an hour is about right, you don't want to push him too much as he will get OT. If you do think he is ready for a little bit more A time just make it 5 - 10 mins max for a few days and se how he does.

With the teat, I would try the next size up and stick with it to let him get used to it - it will take a few feeds. Does he have any signs of reflux? http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=654.0

Whatever you do, don't force him to eat.  He will develop negative feelings towards feedings and just make everything worse.  Not to mention, you are just stressing yourself out ;)

Babies will take what they need.  3-4 ozs is fine for his age as long as he seems happy ;)
