NW when to feed, when to shhh.
« on: June 24, 2011, 04:20:18 am »
I wasn't sure which section to put this question in....
This is a big week for our 3.5 month old - we stopped swaddling and using the paci - today is day 2.  Things are going quite well actually.  I just want to clarify what to do in the night.  Our usual pattern before the changes was to do a single night feed at around 3am, either BF or expressed milk.
Last night dd awoke at 1:30, so I stayed with her and shhd (picking up to pat seems to rev her up more so I leave her in the crib).  It took an hour for her to fully settle.  She would fall asleep for maybe 3 min, the wake up giving her mantra cry (never full out screaming).  She was asleep soundly by 2:30.
She awoke at 3:30, so DH did the feed then.
But, what do we do if for example she wakes and stays awake and it runs into "feeding time" do you just give the feeding after spending all that time shhing?  Will this turn feeding into a prop?
If we do the feel too early in the night, she always wakes around 5 for another, and both feeds, plus the am feed end up being quite mediocre.  I find the only time she feeds well in the night is if it's 3-4 hours between.
Also, I give a DF at 10:30.

I think she is just hungry.  There is a major growth spurt at 3 and 4 months.  Honestly, if it was 3-4 hours from a feed at this age, I just fed.  I found that if I sshh'd and my LO fell asleep, only to wake 1 hour later, he was just hungry.  I realized that he was needing these feeds.
