Ok ladies, I'm sorry but I'm so tired of these NWs!!!!!!!  ??? ??? ??? ???

Back when I posted about him STTN, he did it for like 2 nights and ever since then we've had a NW every single night. My supply is definitely better since I've started to take calcium/magnesium supplements. His eating times are longer and I feel good about Bfing atm. Our eating schedule is generally 3.5/4/3.5/3(or 3.5) plus the Df at 1030/11. But he wakes around 5 every night. Last night, just to see, I did W2S at 4. He woke up 45 minutes later wanting to eat  ::)

We've been dealing with other NWs as well bc he just learned to roll over and sometimes prefers sleeping on his tummy. But I think when he wakes after sleeping hours on his tummy, he might be uncomfortable or something and he hasn't rolled from tummy to back, so he can't roll back over and therefore, he cries. For those NWs, I give him the paci (on his tummy...he doesn't like to be flipped over - cries even harder) and he goes back to sleep. So that gives me a really good indication that the 5 am feeding is actually hunger.

I can't do PU/PD because it's hunger. I don't know what to do!! I've tried to feed him more often during the day and feeds turn awful, he ends up hysterically crying at every feed b/c he doesn't want to eat, he doesn't eat a lot, and then we have the NW anyway! I've experimented so much with this..........Even when I feed him between his BT feeding at the DF, he STILL wakes up for a feed!!!

Hugs J!! I think for the turning over and replacing paci - it kinda just goes with the territory of learning to roll and not knowing how to roll back over and you kinda just have to roll with it for a while. Ha, pun intended!! ;D As far as the 5am NF, I'm not really sure what to say about that except that if you figure it out, let me know!! We have the same thing.

How does he eat at 7 when he wakes for the day then?

Aw - I was hoping for a happy update as we are still in the same boat too :(  Last night Oliver went to sleep 7ish and had had lots of milk as he was unsettled.  We were moving house stuff so didn't get to bed til after midnight and disturbed Oliver as we went to bed, who then went on to fill his nappy.  My boobs felt really full for some reason so decided to feed him ... he def had a FULL feed ... but still woke at 5am for MORE milk (getting very upset when I put him down after 1 side, so had to give a full feed.  During the day he had 4 hrly feeds more or less (having had no success with offering more frequent feeds in the day) ... hmm

Am wondering if our boys need the solids (going by your profile pic, Isaac also has chubby cheeks and isn't a dainty little boy either!! - in fact, he looks a bit similar to Oliver!!).  Am going to wait til AUgust when we move though, and just accepting the nw's (esp as living with parents who are good at helping in mornings so I can get a lie in when I want) ....
L x Having a bw break from 1 Feb 2012 - if you want to get in touch please send me a pm.  I may not be here but you are all in my thoughts xxxx (probably be back some time)

still happily married, just not counting!

Megan, for the NF I am just doing one side and then paci. So when I have the energy to wake him up at 730, he eats a normal feed. But like this morning, I was just too tired to wake up myself! I woke him up at 840 when I woke up and was so engorged.

Lucy, I was thinking the same about solids but of course many sites say that just bc he doesn't seem satisfied means he's 'ready' for solids. They make you second guess everything!! I think just for technical purposes, I'd like to wait until Isaac is officially 5 months.....so in approximately  6 days lol. Idk why...I'll just feel better about it!
He's definitely chunky but still hasn't doubled birth weight or anything.

yeah, i've tried solids a couple times but he doesn't seem ready or interested. And the day I gave him solids twice he sill woke for feedings (more than once!! ::) )

How big are your boys? Milo is over 20lbs now.

It may be nothing to do with it but we have only had 1 Nw (for feeding at any rate) since poppy started solids 2 weeks ago. I know it's not reccommend, just MHO, it's right for us.  And she is a dainty little thing too. I know it feels like itt will never end but these NWs won't be like this forever I promise! Xx

Megan I just reread your post - 20lb?Huh??!  :o

I just had the same response! We just weighed Isaac a couple weeks ago and he was 13.5 lbs. And he's only 10% for height, just now 24"  :D My little munchkin!

So....I read the chapter in BWSAYP on solids which I hadn't done before. Obviously you ladies know she doesn't recommend solids before 6 months under normal circumstances, and she definitely wouldn't recommend it for Isaac - at least until I tried Pu/PD for the NF, which she recommends before starting any solids. Basically, she said if the PU/PD doesn't work after a good go, THEN it MIGHT mean he's ready for solids since a 4mo old shouldn't be needing to eat at night. I read over (again) the example on pg 120 (which she says to refer to during the solids chapter) and I think I need to follow it. Doing (trying) a tank up at 6, 8, and 10 (not waiting until 11) and then not feeding no matter what when he wakes. It seems the goal initially would just be to hold him off until 6/6:30 which is only an hr after he wakes....so honestly (imo), it's not like he's waiting ages.

I think if you're gut is telling you that your LO is ready (like Jackie, esp having more kids!  :) ) then they probably are. The only reason why I'm resorting to this first is bc with all my heart, I do not believe he's ready.

:o :o that's a whole 'nother newborn!!!! with as much as i have to hold him, i just WISH he were only 13ish lbs!! he needs to be held over half of his 3hr atime!!! he is fat, i won't deny, but he's solid as a brick!! DD was much squishier lol ;D

J - if you don't think he's ready, don't start him. and imho, its ok if he has nw still, some babies just do. like Jackie said, it won't last forever and in a month or so you'll both be ready to start solids. he doesn't have to be perfectly textbook perfect right away... most babies aren't. if a 5am nf is the only sleep problem he has, you're already doing way better than most!!!

I know I know!! I know compared to some, I'm living a dream. It's just hard bc I know he's capable of STTN- he did it for over a month! And if after I've exhausted all possibilities he still has a NF, then I just need to remain flexible as I have been. But you better believe me I'm exhausting all my resources! Plus....all this is just making me a better BW for next time  ;)

Just wanted to add I absolutely agree to go with your gut - and if you don't feel he's ready for solids, don't do it! And personally I think 4 months is pretty early for a BF baby to sleep through the night.... DS1 did but I don't know of ANY other babys IRL that did. :-\

Oliver is 16lb2 (was 7lb9 at birth) so more than doubled his birth weight .... between 50+75 centile for weight and 91st for height! His head circumference is 50-75th centile ....... I am sure half of his weight is in his chubby cheeks! I always say how chubby they are and people think I am being cruel - but within a minute of seeing him they call him chubby cheeks too!!

I know that I should do PUPD at night but don't have the energy at the moment and find it easier to feed so just going to do that.  With Murray we used to offer water in a bottle and that would stop him wanting milk.  Will be trying that once we move ....

Jackie, you are right - the sleepless nights feel never-ending but I know they will pass (at some point!).

Justine - that sounds very BWish - try other things and see what your LO is telling you, and if that is milk, then milk it is!
