Help! NWs becoming a pattern!
« on: July 04, 2011, 11:44:32 am »
DS is going to be 7 mo in a few days.  We have had a variety of sleep struggles from the beginning, from SN to frequent (though brief) NWs, etc.  Three nights in the last week he has woken around 12:30am and cried/screamed for about 90 minutes.  He will be consoled, but as soon as we leave the room he starts up again (sometimes after 5-10 minutes of peace). He has 2 teeth and we aren't sure if he is having teething pain, so last night we gave pain reliever after about 15 minutes - this did not seem to help.  He is formula fed and takes about 5-7 oz four times a day, and three small meals of solids.  I am wondering what is now causing these horrible, long NWs?  I'll post our EASY, and any thoughts would be appreciated.  Also, DS has had a long A time in the evening his whole life.  He has begun refusing his last nap of the day way too early, so I have finally given up (though he will take a CN if his first 2 naps are both short).  So this is not new for us.

7:30 - wake and bottle
8:30 - solids
10:00 - nap (this is usually around 90 minutes, though occasionally 45 min)

11:30 - wake and bottle
12:30 - solids
2:00 - nap (this can be earlier or later, depending on AM nap, activity level, etc - and this nap is often on the short side)

3:00 - wake (again, this can be later or earlier)
3:30 - bottle
5:30 - solids
7:00 - bottle, bath, wind down
7:30 - bed

(HUGS!) Just wondering if you are going through what my DS did around the 7 month mark.

He was refusing his afternoon nap, screaming and screaming. It took me a while to work him out as if I gave him too much more A time it then pushed out his BT too much. What we did was start to cap naps. It is a bit trial and error and I had to make sure not to cap too much. However, if you really think the nap refusal is due to needing increased A times you could try capping the first nap so your LO is tired enough for his afternoon nap. Remember the A times will drop if you cap the nap enough that it is not restorative.

Three nights in the last week he has woken around 12:30am and cried/screamed for about 90 minutes.
Your last A is awfully long, and firs A relatively short. Do you think if you shifted your day about 1/2 hour so AM Nap at 10.30 this would help? YOur LO may be OT by BT...but part of me suspects the long NW are developmental or teeth..they always are for us! :-*

My gut tells me they are developmental and/or teething too.  I keep hoping he will increase his second A time so that he naps at 10am and 3pm.  But I think I could push the first one by a few minutes.  His sleep seems so hit or miss!  I can't find the rhyme or reason to short naps, NWs, etc.  I did try to cap the two longer naps, but then I still found that he refused the CN and we had a REALLY long evening A time.  On the bright side there was no NW last night!
