is it time to drop morning bottle?
« on: July 06, 2011, 07:08:23 am »
My lo is 13 months and is currently on 2 bottles a day taking around 17oz. Should I start to offer milk in his cup with b/fast instead of bottle?

Is the first bottle having an impact on his breakfast? If it's not then I wouldn't worry too much but you could start offering milk in a sippy with breakfast to let him get used to it and gradually switch over. We stopped the first bottle about this age because my DD was refusing her breakfast so she had milk in a sippy as a snack mid-morning instead.

Its not having a huge impact just now. If he has 8oz he has a tantrum, I've gave him 9 some mornings, but have to wait 1.5hrs to b/fast.
I will introduced milk in cup for awhile.

You needn't rush it's easier for you to give him a bottle rather than a cup.
He can drink his juice from the cup

Current uk advice is to switch to a cup for all feeds if you can around 12 months to avoid tooth damage (the cup should be free flowing too) so I would try.   I wouldn't be surprised if your lo then starts taking a bit less as some babies have a lot from a bottle because it's comforting to suck.

Yeah, I'd give it a go.  My 15 month old was breastfed till he was 13 months and he's now on two cups of cow's milk a day (190ml each but he varies on how much he takes).  He has a varied diet, lots of cheese, milk and yoghurt in cooking and plenty of red meat so I'm not concerned about his vitamin and mineral intake.  I reckon the FM industry has brainwashed loads of us into thinking toddlers still 'need' FM.  I know ideally they'd all still be BF but that's not practicable for a lot of people by that stage.  Although milk is still an important part of their diets by this point, it's not everything and the thing which shocked me is it makes very little difference to his sleep.  Some days he downs the 190ml and I wonder if he should have more, other days he barely has 100ml and sleeps through fine.
