6 Month LO Suddenly waking at 4am
« on: July 13, 2011, 08:00:43 am »
HI Everyone

I'm hoping someone can help me out

My 6 month old daughter has suddenly started waking at 4am, she is not hungry does not cry and just babbles and talks to herself happily in her cot, she stays awake for about an hour. I have tried leaving her to it and also giving her a dummy but nothing seems to do the trick she still just talks until she is ready to go back to sleep. I dont take her out of her cot or put any lights on etc so she knows its still night time. If she was hungry she would cry until she got food (she loves her food)

She was 8lb 14 born and is currently 19lb so she was weaned early at about 4 and a half months so its not like solids are a new thing for her

I tried cutting out her late nap in case she wasnt tired enough to sleep through so this is what her EASY looks like

7am E (8oz bottle followed by fruit puree)
7.20 A
9.20am S
(11am wake up)
11.30 E (3oz and lunch)
12 Noon A
1.30pm S
(3.30pm wake up) E (4-5oz bottle)
4pm A
5.45 E (6oz bottle and dinner)
6.30 Bath then massage
7.00 2-3 oz bottle then bed

I put her down awake (always) and she goes to sleep independantly, at 7 weeks she was sleeping through with a 10pm DF and at around 11 weeks she refused the DF and still always slept through so i dropped the DF

Any ideas? Could this just be a developmental phase that will pass?

Thanks

Hiya

I'm following along with interest. My dd does very similar things although she doesn't always go back to sleep. How long has she been doing it? Maybe she'll just start resettling quicker and quicker as the nights go on? Also, how long ago did you drop the CN and has that had any effect?

Sorry I can't offer advise but you're not alone!!

Maybe it is a developmental thing. DD seems to be rolling around and spinning around and getting her legs through the sides of the cot so maybe this is a factor (?) Also, I have a thread and it was suggested that it could be the 6 month growth spurt which is a big one or teething

Hi girls,

I don't have any advice either I'm afraid but my 6 month LO is doing the same! Waking anytime from 4 and just chatting, raspberries etc, occassionally moaning but not much. Mostly goes back to sleep, sometimes doesn't (yawn!) We haven't dropped the catnap yet as his naps aren't long enough to get us past 3pm so can't make BT.

If it's a habitual waking at 4 maybe wake2sleep would work?

Following along...

I am no expert by any means but I was having NW like this a few weeks ago and they suggested stretching out my DS A time to 2:30 and that the NW was due to UT.....it worked for me.  He still wakes at night once just to eat and goes right back to sleep.  And your last A time is pretty long for a 6 month old too, I had the same problem, so I implemented the CN for 45 minutes.  It will make BT a little later. HTH!!! Just giving you my feedback and what has worked for me, not sure if it will do the same for you!! :)

Agree with PP - try increasing A time a little.  This can be a tricky stage as they start refusing the CN but need to be doing A times of around 3hrs in order to successfully manage without it.  Try increasing the 1st A time to 2.5hrs & see if that helps.  Try it for 3-5 days to allow time for the routine change to take effect.  If no improvements in her EWing, work on increasing her A times gradually by 10-15mins every 3-5 days. Keep a close eye on her for signs of OT.  Ass PP said, it might be you need to reintroduce the CN but just keep it very short, to tide her over til bedtime. HTH.x
