Partially broken down formulas
« on: July 16, 2011, 10:42:11 am »
Hi,
My DD is just 6mths old and we have just started solids...purred sweet potato, we have had mucous poops for as long as I can remember, I bf and am on a soy and dairy free diet for over three months now. Her irritability improved about three to four days after starting the diet...I am a little worried about the persistence of the mucous stools and have seen my paed, he gave us a script for elecare, but have been unsuccessful in getting her to take it... Basically I guess my question is is there a formula available in Australia that is partially broken down? And doesn't smell so bad as neocate and elecare?
Also should I continue to worry about the mucous? She is generally no longer irritable and has no more blood in poops just mucous.
Thanks xx

I think most of the broken down formulas are foul, its the breaking down that makes it that way.

Although I know Nutramigen is REALLY bad, neocate I dont find smells too bad and Alyssa loves it BUT we were on Nutramigen first so considering how vile that is i dont find neocate bad

Ive had a look for you Aptimil Pepti trades in Aus as

Karicare Gold Pepti-Junior

Karicare Gold Pepti Junior is an all ages infant formula designed for the dietary management of cows’ milk protein allergy. It is suitable from birth onwards and available on prescription.

-----------
You cant buy Karicare gold pepti (same with aptimil pepti) so you will need a script, I would assume its the same formulation as Aptimil pepti... I will have a look and see if i can find out

Ok thanks so much...does it smell really bad? Am having such a hard time getting DD to take elecare, not sure if that's because if the smell or the fact that it I'd a formula..
Will try and get a script and try the karicare one ..

We are on neocate over here. DD hated it at first and I resorted to putting some brown sugar in it to take away the foul taste. DD's dietician said its pretty much the same deal as using the flavourings for it anyways. She take it fine now and we are gradually rereducing the sugar we put in it...she now only has half a tsp in a 7oz bottle.

We weighed it up and it was a stress buster for me knowing she would take the formula and her symptoms were still relieved. Its not a long term solution for us though. We will be trialling soy from next week and hoping that she'll do fine and we can move to soy formula which apparantly tastes ALOT better than neocate!

If she is fine with the mucus I wouldn't worry too much.  I have two food intolerant refluxers and my guide was mucus + unsettledness - then I would look at doing something.   Some amount of mucus is normal. It may be that the gut IS irritated but she is coping, and there will be no long term damage, the gut will heal once the irritants are out of the diet.  :)

If she does become unsettled or seem uncomfortable, or the mucus progresses to strings or blood, I would look at doing something, it means the damage is progressing.

Ok good to know...she is so much more settled now I am off dairy and soy but I worry that something else is bothering her...sometimes she has lots of mucous stringy bits and sometimes just a little mucous...I guess I'll do what you suggest eloysh and worry if it seems to be worsening...
