Younger sibling dropping?
« on: July 17, 2011, 19:31:28 pm »
We have a 2 and 5 yo. Our 5 yo dropped naps at 3, which I thought was young. But now our 2 yo is not interested in napping unless I'm holding her. I really hope it's just a separation anxiety thing or stage. Please tell me this isn't normal 2nd born early nap drop surprise ;)

I don't think she's dropping, especially since she will still nap when you are holding her.  I'm sure it's probably developmental or something similar.  We has some random nap refusals around 2yrs and I was worried, but it was just a phase.  What does her routine look like now?  Has she learned any new skills or language lately?  Any teething?

She has really started to become aware of what her sister is doing. Anything big sis is doing, she has to be doing. Anything big sis has, she needs to have. I tried using this for nap and ir doesn't work, but it does at bedtime. Bedtime she puts up a little fus, but nothing like naptime. She sees her big sister go to bed and then we go to, talking all the way about it. Tried the exact thing at naptime. No luck.

As for her routine...she wakes around 7. Nap is somewhere between 1 & 2 depending on our day. When her sister is at preschool we would be closer to 2, but now that it is summertime we aim more for 1. Bedtime is normally 7:30/8, which with the sun staying up is a little harder these days.

She doesn't have her 2 year molars yet, but at her 2 year appt the dr said she didn't see any signs of them yet. Occasionally she chews on her fingers way in the back of her mouth, but both our girls are months of teething before anything pops.

Our 5 yo also just had her tonsils out, so we have been at home. With a lot less activity (no running around). So maybe that is playing a part in this too? She seems to be going pretty strong this afternoon. I figured she would be cranky, but she is acting quite normal. However we do still have a few hours until bedtime, so I shouldn't say too much ;)

There could be a combination of things going on here then.  Perhaps she is a bit UT with less activity.  How long is her nap usually?  Molars could be shifting around under the gums causing some trouble, though I don't think that's the root of the problem.  I think most likely she is just not wanting to miss anything, kwim?  I'm sure that's fairly common that this age as I read a lot of posts about 2yr olds skipping naps.  It does seem to pass.

Her naps are normally long, well long compared to what her sister always did ;) Anywhere between 2-3 hours.

Maybe she is getting too much sleep overall?  It could be time to start cutting her nap.  Though I know the issue is getting her down for her nap in the first place, I just wonder if her overall sleep needs cutting, kwim?

Sometimes she wakes really early, somewhere around 5ish? So on those days, she is definitely not getting too much sleep. We have tried keeping her up later to solve that, but she is uninterested in staying up after big sister is asleep. All she does is ask for her and cry that she is asleep. Our 5 yo definitely dropped her napping too early at 3, and needs to go to bed pretty early because of being overtired with her sleep apnea (hopefully not an issue after healing from tonsil surgery). Hopefully they will both be staying up and possibly sleeping in a little bit more the rest of the summer ;) Who knows maybe a miracle will happen with the tonsils and they will both nap and sleep like angels? Haha!!! A girl can dream right ;)

I will keep my fingers crossed for you that they both start sleeping better.  ;)
