shh/pat questions - getting started
« on: July 21, 2011, 07:41:34 am »
I'm starting sleep training my 7 wk old. For WD, I take him into his room with the lights off, swaddle, and hold him til he drifts off. If he starts crying and getting really worked up, I walk him around until he settles down and we start again. My problems come when I try to put him in his cot. Unless he's really out, he wakes up and starts looking around wide awake. I try shh.patting, but he just wriggles and eventually starts to cry. I keep shh/patting but he usually works himself upto screaming so I pick him up and the cycle starts again. Should I only start shh/pat when he starts to cry? And once he is crying, should I just keep going? He is very wiggly and even with swaddling he thrashes around, usually before crying. Should I try to hold him down? His jolts seem to go on for ages (20-30 min), should I shh/pat for that long?
Many thanks.

Hi! I'm experiencing similar issues with my 10wo and have written a post but no replies yet... :-\
The whole concentrating on three things doesn't always work and Ava can cry through patting and shushing!!! I've been cradling her and letting her suck on my finger until her eyes close and then put her in her moses basket. I then pat her chest for 5-10 mins and stay with her for another ten to make sure I can settle her if she jolts and needs it. I also use white noise in the day.
Her morning and afternoon naps seem to be 30 mins if she jolts and wakes but she will go longer for her lunchtime nap as a result.
I'm persevering with it and hope to start seeing some results soon. At keast we have moved on from only napping in car or buggy or being rocked in car seat!
Hope you get some results soon! x

J can cry through patting, shushing, and walking around. For some reason walking up and down the stairs seems to at least break the cycle. Sometimes when he gets worked up it just esclates until I break the cycle and then he'll calm down.
I've been doing various pats, back, front, stroking his head, but I haven't hit the magic combo yet. He takes a paci and I wonder if I wake him up more if I try to replug when he's drowsy, but not asleep. Also it seems to take him forever to drop off.
Glad to know others are trying to figure these things out.

We've had a successful shh/pat! The trick for J (DH discovered) is that we have to put in on his side facing away from us. I think our faces are too distracting and it keeps him awake. Hopefully he'll sleep for more than 30 min this time...
