DF - has anyone tried using mainly the fatty part of EBM?
« on: July 28, 2011, 21:12:03 pm »
HI, I was looking at how my EBM separates when left in the fridge, and wondered what would happen if I poured off some of the watery part before heating it to give to my DS for his dream feed. He doesn't take much at the DF, and I thought if it was fattier it might keep him full longer, but I also don't want to dehydrate him! Has anyone any ideas about this?
TIA

I never did this....my DS always took a whole bottle, regardless of what was in there, during the DF as he had a huge need to suck. Even drained 10oz EBM by 4 mths in a few minutes!!!

What I did was pump first thing in the morning for the DF, straight after my DS fed (he was one sided till 3 mths and then after that I had to sometimes pump at the second feed as well to ensure enough for DF) and this was also fairly fatty milk I suppose.

I've never heard of anyone separating the foremilk from the hindmilk for feeds, so don't know what to suggest for now.

How old is your LO and is he taking a NF as well?

He's 11 weeks, he'll only  take a small amount for the DF, so I figured if it was fattier it would last him longer. He's currently waking for a NF around 3 and then sometines around 6, although this morning he slept till 7!

He's doing really well for his age. What time do you DF at? Maybe you could do some of the milk you pumped as a top up at bedtime and the rest for the DF?

I found the top up at bedtime to work for my DD to get more calories into her.

I heard the evening milk is fattier and higher calories than morning milk so you may be best to use ebm pumped in the eve. Not sure about your original question though - sorry!

I do top him up just before bed, around 8pm then the dream feed is whenever my husband can last to... usually around 10:30/11. He is doing well, I'd just like a slightly longer stretch at the beginning of the evening, as generally when he wakes up the 2nd time, he is wide awake and ready for the day!
