Leaking Question
« on: July 29, 2011, 13:16:28 pm »
Quick question: what do you do when feeding from one side and the other side leaks and leaks (like at night feeds when not wearing a bra and it's going everywhere) I only feed one side per feed btw

Hi Jo - big congrats again x

I used a muslin to catch the spray during the night. When I was feeling up to it and there was lots (like 2-3 oz at the height of OS) I used a presterilised cup (Avent) and caught the drops....

A muslin cloth and press hard on the nipple.

During those times I would wear a loose fitting sports bra that would hold pads in place, but still be comfortable enough to sleep in.  Some maternity wear also has special slots for pads as well, though you don't need to spend the $ if you don't want to.

I used a burp cloth to stem the flow, too.  I leaked all the time, so was in a nursing bra 24h a day with pads to stop the leaking.  The sports bra type nursing bras are really comfy for nighttime wear :)

I used to wake up in a puddle all over the bed even, so went to wearing pads in bras too..

If I feel the letdown I use the inside of my forearm and push on my breast.  Works for me to stop the leak.  I do sleep with pads on since I'm obviously not awake to do that and don't want to wake up soaked!

Hi Jo,
didn't realise you had the baby, Congrats!!!
I also used a muslin cloth to catch the leakag but my sister had a breast shell, that was to let the nipple air dry and it would collect the BM in it.

I used either a burp cloth or wore a singlet with a shelf in it so I could put in the breast pad...though sometimes that would leak through too ::)

I sometimes wear nursing pads but I often forget and just have a wet nightgown.  ::)  I'm so tired these days that I just fall asleep again regardless! :P

Wow Jo, he's here! Congratulations!!!
I sleep in a sleep nursing bra, like a soft sports bra type in cotton with clips like normal nursing bras. Was easy to feed in and meant I could wear pads at night too. It's so comfy and I still wear them at night but minus the pads :) Got them in 2-packs at Mothercare.

Nursing bra with breast pads all day, every day, for the last 7.5 months!!  Never sure when I'm going to leak and when I'm not :-\

In the earlier days, it was breast shells to collect, but only during the day!!

I don't know if this is just me or if it's something that works, but I'm sure I read (and it worked for me), that pressing down hard with the heel of your hand on the boob you're not feeding from, during let down, 'trains' your breast not to let down/leak. That sounds crazy. It did work for me though I had a good supply (and overactive letdown) but never had to use pads past about 3-4 weeks.

Support for heavy breasts is important at night if you want to avoid stretch marks and sagging and also for comfort so i have worm a nursing bra for 2.25yrs now 24/7. In the early days a breast shield to catch the escaping gold or pads when there is less. I find putting a fingertip over the nipple stops the leaking but it is quite good if you are engorged and also means less pumping.
