9 week old boy falling asleep through every feed
« on: July 29, 2011, 20:13:46 pm »
hi, im new to this forum, but have been reading and it is very useful, i just thought i would ask for some guidance.

My 9 week old boy was born at 6lb 6oz and is basically playing catch up, he was weighed yesterday and was 9lb 7oz we have just upped his bottles to 6oz as he was draining 4oz bottles. Now the problem is sometimes he will finish his bottles and others he wont, this isnt a issue as hes gaining weight and maintaing his percentile but he has a habit of falling asleep through every feed and it can take up to an hour maybe more to feed him. do you think it could be the teets hes on size 1?

thanx muchly x

How is your EASY going? Not napping enough in the day can make babies tired and more difficult to feed so if you want to post your EASy we can have a look.

Definitly try a faster teat, a bottle feed should be done in about 20 mins, even a newborn should be able to take a full bottle feed in that time. If a feed is stopping and starting over a long period you can run into the danger of snacking and with an "A" time of only about 1hour ish at this age it could be why he is falling asleep.

There are very general size guides on the teat packs but if he is taking a while to feed it's always worth thrying the next one. If he is coughing and choking and letting milk pour out it will be too fast, otherwise a thye do take a few feeds to get used to the new flow so be guided by him.

My two both went onto faster teats before the pack said they "should" and some babies prefer a slow teat way past the time they "should" be on a faster one.

HTH!

we have the same issue here too, my midwife said the teat sizes are a guide only and so we went up to the one for a 3 month old and our feeds have gone from one hour to only 20mins or so (when he isnt falling asleep and is awake to feed that is)
my boy is falling asleep on the bottle though because hes not napping properly and so is exhausted by feedtime

Hi have the same problem and mine is on 2 teats as swapped him. This worked for 3 weeks but now sleeping again! I change his bum to feed some more which works sometimes.
