preparing Neocate
« on: August 04, 2011, 12:27:01 pm »
Oliver has Neocate prescribed but we have only used it a couple of times (he is breastfed, not starved!!)  ;)  I was making a bottle up for him yesterday to see if he would still drink the stuff (which is did, albeit looking none too impressed!) - the instructions say to boil the water, leave it to stand for 30 mins THEN add the powder.  I know "normal" formula needs the powder adding when the water is hot - with Neocate, it is okay to add it to cool water (maybe because it doesn't need to kill the milk bacteria).

Just wondering as it would me much easier adding powder to water that has been sitting in the kettle (DH always boils up fresh water each time) - am considering adding Neocate to baby foods instead of ebm as I hate expressing ....

Actually all formulas in the Uk follow that guideline - boil water and leave it to sit for 30 minutes before adding the powder, so it is no different.  The reason for letting it sit 30 minutes is for health and safety - it is not too hot that you will burn yourself shaking it ::) but it is still hot enough that it will still kill the bacteria. So add it before 30 minutes is up but not too much after.  I would not let it sit for much longer than 40 minutes or it will not be hot enough to kill any potential bacteria in the formula powder - formula is not considered "sterile" and so that is the reason the water needs to be so hot.

What Mashi said! Did the instructions say to pour the boiling water into the bottle then let it stand or just boil the kettle and let that stand for 30 mins? The kettle standing will obviously be hotter for longer than a poured out bottle.

We used a reflux formula that had to be added to cold water for it to mix properly, we have never had any tummy problems from adding the powder to cold water in sterilised bottles.

Actually I found Nutramigen to be the same.  I used to pour the boiled water into the bottle, add the formula powder and then sit the bottle with powder into a jug of cold water. Wait until it was cold to shake.  So that way the powder was added to the still very hot water, but if I tried to shake it up it just never dissolved properly. If I waited until it was cool, a few shakes and it was mixed.  The Nutramigen help line was the one who suggested that, as they agree it mixed better in cold water, but needed to be added to hot. HTH!

thanks - so it still needs added to hottish water to sterilise it - I did wonder.  I always just used pre-mixed formula with Murray if we ever used it  ::)

The label says boil water, leave to cool then pour into a bottle.  Suppose like all things this is best practice but not doing it properly is usually okay but has some risk ... since will just be now and then will do it properly!
Thanks for quick replies  :-*

I would suspect the reason for leaving it in the kettle is that there is a lid, but putting it in the bottle to cool means that dust and such can get in? ???
