Toddler Breakfast Cereals
« on: August 06, 2011, 23:19:43 pm »
Hey there girls, ds is 2+ years old now and we're still doing common baby cereals with fortified iron for breakfast, mainly because it helps ensure he gets a good amount of milk and carbs in the morning, and is the fastest thing to eat!

However, I feel that it's about to move on to more grown up cereals like Muesli, but am not sure how, and what brands are good. any ideas?

I've made my girls cinnamon raisin oatmeal (super easy in the microwave) and quinoa with blueberries.  Both are super easy and very nutritious.  They are also allowed multigrain cheerios but no other packaged cereals.  :)

Amelia eats Earth's Best instant oatmeal at least 3x week...it takes literally a minute to make, is lower in sugar than any oatmeal I could find, and it's organic. That and some fruit and she is good to go!

For boxed cereal she likes Cheerios or Wheat Chex mixed with Cinnamon Life!  Wheat Chex has a ton of iron, but she wasn't crazy about it by itself...so I added the Cinnamon Life (dh's fave! ::) ) in a small dose, now she gets the Wheat Chex into her happily!

We rotate a few things - Weetabix (I prefer the mini ones with raisins and nuts), plain Shreddies, Toppas (they were called Wheaties when I was a kid but are just shredded wheat  bite by Kelloggs, not sure what they are now called in other places!), and bircher muesli.

He has weetabix (the normal ones), shreddies, rice krispies, ready brek (plain fine oatmeal), scrambled egg, toast, fruit, no added sugar banana pancakes and normally a combination of several of those!  I sometimes make myself a kind of cold soggy muesli (bear with me) which is plain oatmeal with sultanas and milk.  It goes soggy but it's actually really nice and really filling.

If you do buy normal muesli, in the UK anyway, they don't recommend nuts (unless they're ground) until 5 I think because of the choking risk.

Keen to hear how to make quinoa for breakfast!

With DS he has Cheerios, Weetabix, Porridge and Shreddies all in rotation with a glut of fruit for afters if hasnt already chosento have it on top. DS gets obsessed with his brekkie, he has weetabix and only weetabix for a year until he was 18 months old, he refused anything else. I then managed to get him to have Cheerios and he then got obsessed with them for MONTHS. Right now its Shreddies.  ::)

I did buy Weetabix a while ago, but never tried it with ds, so will be giving it a go, and see how it goes :)

Nicole, could you please tell me how you make the oatmeal and quinoa cereals?

Here's one recipe for Breakfast Quinoa from Martha Stewart:

2 cups whole or low-fat milk, plus more for serving
1 cup quinoa, rinsed
3 tablespoons light-brown sugar, plus more for serving
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus more for serving
1 cup (1/2 pint) fresh blueberries, plus more for serving
Directions

Bring milk to a boil in a small saucepan. Add quinoa, and return to a boil. Reduce heat to low, and simmer, covered, until three-quarters of the milk has been absorbed, about 15 minutes.

Stir in sugar and cinnamon. Cook, covered, until almost all the milk has been absorbed, about 8 minutes. Stir in blueberries, and cook for 30 seconds. Serve with additional milk, sugar, cinnamon, and blueberries.

Apple Cinnamon Breakfast Quinoa
Start your day out right with this healthy and delicious breakfast quinoa. With only 228 calorie and 8.9 grams of protein, it’s a guilt free treat that will keep you feeling full and energized all throughout the morning.

1/2 cup quinoa, washed
1 cup natural apple juice
1 cup light soy milk
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
3/4 cup raisins

Bring the apple juice and quinoa to boil in a medium pan. Let simmer until the liquid is absorbed. Add the soy milk, cinnamon and raisins. Cover and let simmer for another 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla essence. Serve hot or cold!

As far as the oatmeal, I just bought a bag of oatmeal with flax meant for porridge, the recipe was on the bag, but it was just water and oatmeal in the microwave then mix in a pinch of salt, a little brown sugar, cinnamon, and raisins.  :)

Quinoa is also very yummy done up with peaches!  Recipe was pretty much the same as the blueberry one except I think it had allspice in it.  Oh, and I made it with soy milk, which I hate, but it tasted good! Will have to try out the apple cinnamon one on Spencer.

Here we are currently on a Rice Chex kick after more than 2 years of cheerio addictions (okay, they aren't really cheerios but a GF type of the same cereal).  Sometimes we do Rice Krispies (the GF version) but I don't buy anything that isn't GF because the kids both snack on it dry and leave it laying around so it is too hard to keep separate!

The quinoa sounds really nice, might try it with peaches since we don't have fresh blueberries at the moment.

Thanks :)
