What type of formula do you use?
« on: August 13, 2011, 18:45:46 pm »
Hi all!!
My DD is 10 month she's BF and I started weaning since she will be in full time daycare next month.
I was wondering what kind/brand of formula do you use and why?

I tried Good Start (Nestle) with probiotics and omegas but is sooo expensive! It tastes awful btw so not sure if she likes it (she always leaves half of it)

Any suggestions??
Marie

Hello, once she's 12mo she can move to cow's milk anyway, could you perhaps "stretch" the weaning and put her straight on that?
(also not that I am trying to convince you otherwise but it's v possible to continue bf just once or twice a day if you wanted to, say morning and evening :))
I combined fed both mine from around 4/5 months and dd1 had aptimil mostly I think, and dd2 had nutramigen which is a special formula for mpi babies :) I did continue to bf for 11m and 13.5m respectively.

Yes, I'll keep Bf'ing at BT but I still have to give her formula at least at WU and afternoon. She still needs at least 3 milk intake a day.

I'm a bit terrified of introducing cow's milk, she's not eating that much variety of solids food yet, so I'm no sure if I will transition to 100% cow's milk in the next two month....

I heard there were formulas that are made to transition to cow's milk until 18 month that still give them all the nutrients they need. But I'm a bit lost at what to buy and why....

oh I forgot to mention, I can't express more than 1oz....my milk supply has dropped so much!! That's the other reason I'm starting weaning because I feel she's hungry anyways. So I decided to give her formula and because I'll start working full time next month I wont be able to express a lot.
I'm ok with weaning, I feel I have given her the most I can. I don't want to push further since I always had milk supply issues....I don't need more stress right now!

I have used formula exclusively since DD was 10 days old... Nestle Goodstart with DHA/ARA (but not probiotics - made her really gassy!).  I switched her to the one without the DHA/ARA a month ago... much cheaper and I figure that she has gotten the main benefit already :)  I took DHA when I was preggers too!

When she was refusing feeds a month ago, we did try Enfamil thinking that she didn't like the taste anymore and DH tried it and said it was "milkier" tasting than the GoodStart...

If you are looking for cheap but still perfectly fine, I have heard that the President's Choice is very milky tasting and that most babies will take it easily.

Thank you ladies!
It's hard to decide which formula to buy since most of them had the same benefits. The price varies depending on the added ingredients, but not so sure which of those added ingredients are the most important...for example some of them provide Iron, some Vit A, some Omegas and or probiotics......still lost!

The doc says any brand is good, so no good advise from his part either.

Kara why did you stopped Enfamil if it tasted better? I'm thinking of trying that one, but I don't want to switch back and forth

I stopped the Enfamil because it wasn't the formula that was causing her problems, as I had thought it might be before we knew about her pooper issues ;)  She did very well on the Good Start from birth and the taste was never an issue for her.  GoodStart is generally easier on the tummy than other brands are... it digests faster than a standard milk-based formula does (such as Enfamil).  Good Start is made with 100% whey protein, others are a blend of whey/casein... casein in breast milk is different than the stuff in formula - the stuff in formula can curdle and cause slower digestion...

That said, get an iron fortified one... no need for a Stage 2 or Transitional formula - they generally have higher calcium and iron, which she won't need as she is doing well with solids...   Probiotics are not needed either... and neither are the omegas.

All brands have to meet basic standards in Canada so it's a matter of choice really :)
