4 month old- NOT EATING =( do i call the dr?
« on: August 17, 2011, 15:56:24 pm »
DD will be 4 months on saturday and we all just recently got over the stomach flu. she had hers on saturday. ever since she hasnt had much of an appetite. it will be like 5 hours and she hasnt shown me she is hungry, so i make a bottle anyway to see if she will eat. well when she does she pushes the bottle away after a minute or so and doesnt want it back. all day yesterday she only ate about 2 ounces each time. last night she finally ate at 1030 like she was starving when the bottle was empty she started screaming so i grabbed one out of the fridge, warmed it up and gave it to her...i had to stop her from eating so she wouldnt end up eating like 10 ounces! she then woke up at 4 and acted hungry but only took an ounce. now this morning at 8 she only drank another ounce. is this normal? she normally takes about 5 ounces. should i call the dr?

I would, you don't want her getting dehydrated.  I guess at least she is taking something though.  These things sometimes take a bit of time to get back to normal but I'd call the dr just to be on the safe side.

Definitly check, but if she is having wet and dirty nappies chances are she is fine. My DS had a D&V bug when he was about 14 weeks old and it took him a couple of weeks to get back to normal eating.

If you think about yourself, you don't recover straight away it takes a while to get your normal appetite back, it's no different for babies. Also she may be having some stomach pains from the big she had so may not really feel like eating just yet. Keep offering her food and she will take what she needs/ wants and she should slowly pick up again over the next few days.

Thanks ladies.. laura- thats what the dr said. he said i can come by anytime to check her weight but they said it could be either the hot weather or recovering from the stomach bug. i havent been adding any rice cereal just so i know she gets all the nutrients she can get from the formula. i will deal with the spit up until she eats better.

I know first hand how hard it is when they don't eat hun... but don't worry.  She won't starve... just keep offering and if you are worried about dehydration, you can add a little extra water to her formula.  It won't fill her up for longer, but will get her fluids up :)

ETA - my doctor suggested an extra ounce of water per 4 oz bottle.  So make a bottle of 4 ozs as you normally would and top it up with an extra ounce of water.
