Twins Sleeping
« on: August 22, 2011, 09:50:03 am »
I have girl/boy twins who are fast approaching 10 months.  I have always thought that when they were full enough they would sleep through the night but I am now realising that they are only waking out of habit.  Some nights they sleep better than others.  We are reading the Baby Whisperer top tips to Sleep through the night and are planning to start this Thursday with our action plan.  I was wondering if you had any additional tips for managing this with twins?

Thanks

Steph

Hi Steph--
I have twins too, who are actually the same age as yours!
My first tip, really, which is an obvious one, I would imagine--is make sure there are two of you on hand. At the beginning, I can't imagine having only one person doing this. But you say "we" so I'm guessing you have a helper.

My second recommendation is make sure you're taking careful notes so you can really see what is going on. With two, it's even more confusing and harder to see schedules, etc.

Last thing to say--because there are two of them, and I'm assuming they're sharing a room, just accept it is going to take longer than it will with one baby. So be patient and hang in there.

After two TOUGH weeks, we made huge progress, so I hope you will too.

You are right I do have a helper (Hubby) which is why we are starting on Thursday as he isn't back into work until Tuesday so that gives us plenty of days where he can really help out with this.

They are sharing a room and one of my concerns is them waking each other during the process, did you manage to keep them in the same room whilst you were sleep training them?  It is good to speak to someone who has been through it with Twins.

Steph xx

In the beginning, they did disturb each other more, but I have to say after about three weeks of the process, they really do not disturb each other any more.

Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

Polka said it all great. Get help! Stick with it and best of luck to you.

We used and still do use a cd player with a track of ocean waves playing throughout the night. Any fan can provide white noise or if you want to put a radio on a static station that will work too. It will diffuse the noise and hopefully help them sleep as well as keep them from waking each other.

Yes--the white noise is key. Thanks for mentioning that, Vicki! I'm sure that helps in moderating the noise from the noisier twin.

The white noise idea is something we hadn't thought of.  Will sort something for that.  Thank you guys.  Wish me luck we start tomorrow night :).

I was thinking about you last night, Steph, since it was your first night. How did it go?

Hi,

just wanted to add my twin Mum support xxx

I'm VERY VERY lucky in that my boys started sleeping through at 13 weeks (they are 17 weeks now).  First one, then the other.

We play a classical music for babies CD on a loop all night, it also helps to play this when I put them down for naps.

Mine don't wake each other unless they get REALLY loud, which happens at nap times rather than in the night.  Glad you have your hubby to help, what would we do without them :-)

Hi all.  Two nights in and it is going really well.  Last night we only did the one feed and my LG went right through.  We only had two stirrings from the LB and he went back to sleep really well.  We did have a 6.30 am start but I can handle that.  Unfortunately I didn't sleep amazingly last night so am still pooped.  Feeling really positive about the whole process.

Thanks for all your support
