Ready to rock solid food but... how?
« on: August 22, 2011, 10:23:15 am »
Hi !

Our DS is now a bit more than 5 months old. He is close to 8 kg weight and drinks 6 bottles a day of 180-200 ml. He can hold his heads and loves to seat. He is also waking up in the middle of the night (but I think this may be due to the fact that we were feeding him till a couple of weeks ago).

I think he would be ready to start with some fruit (he has some constipation issues so may be better to rule out cereals for the time being?) but I have a lot of questions....

What fruits shall we start with?
When should we do it? before milk or after milk?
I guess we will just follow him but... How much should we aim for?

Thanks a lot !

Hi Epmoreno,

I can't post the links right now but I know all that info could be found under the FAQ section. I just started solids with DS and have been visiting there frequently! But...start with mild fruits/veges (apple, pear, avocado, sweet potato, etc.), do it after milk - about an hour after, and start with 1 or 2 tsp. :) HTH.

Hi

thanks for your post. I will follow your advice and will visit the FAQ section. I have read that many moms here do it after milk but also read in Tracy's book to start in the morning before milk?

I will keep browsing and start making a menu :-)

Thanks a lot for the help !

The info in Tracy's book re: feeding before milk is outdated.  If she were still with us, she would have changed it to the one hour after milk :)

Start with veggies... yams are a great one... gently and easy to digest.

If baby has been constipated, peas are a great source of fibre - my DD loved them right off the start!  Avoid carrots and apples and bananas (unless very ripe).

I would do just once a day for a few days just to make sure everything goes well. Within the first week, I was doing breakfast and lunch with DS but that's up to you and up to how your DS takes to solids. I'm going to wait a couple more weeks before doing dinner so that solids aren't replacing any milk calories.

Follow his lead!  Just watch that he doesn't drop his milk intake... if he does, cut back on solids :)

I started DD at just over 5 months with just a bit of cereal or fruit at breakfast only... then added in a bit of lunch after a month or so... then a bit of dinner another month later... she is 9 months now and still has days where she could take solids or leave them :)
