Chocolate
« on: August 24, 2011, 00:40:27 am »
So what the deal with chocolate? I was told to go off dairy but in the list of stuff the doctor reeled off (cheese, milk, butter, the obvious dairy) she said chocolate. Does ALL chocolate have milk in it? I was looking on the label for Oreos and it doesn't mention any milk products so are they okay? Having no dairy is killing me! Please do not break my heart and say I can't have something, anything chocolate! I need a fix!

OMG I will say a prayer that you can have it!!!!  Yikes! Life without chocolate?!?    :'(  I'm sure there is something...!!

ETA: Tropical Source and Trader Joes have diary-free chocolate...but *most* every other contains dairy.  So says google.   >:(  Stupid google.

Chocolate bars and things should have a list of ingredients on them. If they just have cocoa and beans and vanilla, etc. listed, they should be okay. If they have milk, milkfat, etc. listed, then they are not okay. I am dairy/soy free but can have coconut milk based chocolate ice cream, dark chocolate bars, rice based chocolate bars, etc. I can't have oreos b/c of soy though :(

If something has chocolate in it but doesn't break down what type of chocolate they use (ie: is it just cocoa or did they use a pre-made milk chocolate) then I'd steer clear b/c it is uncertain as to whether there is dairy or not.

Dark chocolate is usually safe if you read the ingredients. There was one I got from Wal-Mart. It was big and had a black and purple wrapper. Sorry I forget the name of it. It was a bit bitter but enough to get me 'over the edge' iykwim.

Props for the ED :-*

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I totally needed to hear all of that right now. Already life without ice cream is killing me (will look into coconut milk ice cream!) so not having chocolate would make me insane for sure! I have a dark chocolate bar but it has butterfat in it so I wasn't sure if all chocolate had some form of milk or just my stash in the house!

Does anyone know if chocolate in general upsets babies tummies? (through breastmilk obviously)

Don't forget- anything vegan is also dairy free. :) And I know for sure that my vegan sister has found chocolate cookies, ice cream, etc etc. So maybe a good vegan site would be a help. Good luck!

Oh and you can also bake using oil instead of butter/marg just use a bit less and add 1tsp salt. Add a touch more flour and you're baking happy :)

I didn't have much luck finding chocolate that didn't contain milk unless it was the super dark kind that I don't much care for!  The rice milk chocolate bars are pretty good.  I've been drinking dark chocolate almond milk for something sweet.  Make sure it's really cold and you can 'almost' imagine it's real chocolate milk!

O about it bothering lo's tummies.  My MIL told me that when I had DS1 along with about 10 other foods I should avoid.  None of them seemed to bother my DS so I just assumed it was a wives tale.  I'm sure it does bother some, but I wouldn't avoid it unless you see a reaction specifically from the chocolate.

Not sure if you have the enjoy life brand in Canada but they make chocolate chips that are free of all common allergines.  They're great for baking.

My friend with a dairy-allergic DD has discovered that Oreos have little enough actual food in them that dairy isn't one of the ingredients. LOL

Oh, she also found vegan chocolate chips for baking. I don't care for them straight up, but they're OK in cookies.

Earth Balance dairy/soy free spread works well as a butter sub. for anything you'd want really (corn on the cob, to make brownies, etc.) I found an organic brownie mix that had no milk. I just had to add "milk" to it and used vanilla flavored almond milk. The vanilla is very sweet and works well for baking or just to drink mmmmm The chocolate is good as well. I can only use the regular for cereal or to make things like instant mashed potatoes (some brands have no milk already in and I use the butter sub. and have some version of mashed potatoes then---though they aren't super good.)

Whole Foods and Wegmans are my favorite places to shop for dairy free stuff.
