Does constipation generally point to one intolerance??
« on: August 26, 2011, 22:49:52 pm »
Just looking for the reason for DD's sudden constipation problems at 8 months... are there any food intolerances that generally cause terrible, sudden constipation?

I find with both girls too much dairy is very constipating.

Bananas do it for us and too much cereal.

ugh... dairy would be a tough one to cut since her formula is milk based ;)  Don't think that is it though, she was never constipated until we were already 2 months into solids... I almost wonder if it was just the jump in the amount of solids that she is taking.. I am trying to get more water into her now :)

She won't eat cereal (except for a handful of Cheerios a day LOL), so I don't think that's it.  And we avoid bananas unless really ripe - since they can actually be laxative when over ripe :)

Sigh...

LOL!  This is far more serious constipation than what can be fixed with prune juice :)  We are in the land of suppositories and laxatives :(

Ooh yucky - poor thing!!!  Bananas, baby rice & bread are big triggers for us.

We're dairy intolerant & that just caused runny poop explosions, rashes, eczema & cradle cap.  Never knew it could constipate too!

For my DD1 we never had an issue with the dairy being constipating when she was only have milk.  It was the cheese/yogurts etc that caused the constipation.   And it co incided with the increase in dairy in her diet and cutting a milk feed.

Good to know Shiv!  She doesn't really have much extra dairy in her diet right now and is still suffering... ugh.

My doc dis tell me that ANY change in diet can do it. So chloes switch to formula, starting solids, and jumping to "mainly" solids can all do it :)

That's what I thought Kat... I really think it all started because of the huge jump in her solids intake a couple weeks before we landed in the ER the first time.  She went from having 1-2 ozs with 2 and sometimes 3 meals a day to chowing a 7 oz bottle plus 2-3 ozs of food at every meal plus a BT bottle of 9 ozs... that combined with the travelling down south probably was a recipe for disaster... and it was much warmer in Vancouver too and she wasn't a big water drinker at the time...

Now it's just getting her back to "normal."  Sigh.

Thanks Eloise!  I have kept a sippy close by at all times for the last week or so... it's water/prune juice... started probiotocs again and put her back to a higher dose of the MiraLax to get things moving again... so far so good!

Hi, I just wanted to add, and this may be totally just "my" baby, but I found that sweet potato in any form caused awful constipation ~even in soup form for both my kids...both in homemade food and in any jars I used....and biscuits/bread also, even in small quantities had the same packing effect?

Hope it all settles really soon, it's horrid for them  ;D

Gluten caused terrible Constipation in E. no one would help her either all i got was "breastfed babies don't get constipated" We cured her with prunes cooked in prune juice in replace of normal meals just prunes in prune juice 3 times a day. we are talking alot of prunes and it worked amazingly poor thing didnt go for a couple of weeks and was at the screaming agony stage

we do put some of our prune success down to slight sal sensitivity but if you add 3 prune meals to 2 days of it I am confident it will get things going and then 1 prune pudding or breakfast every other day to help keep regular while you figure it

but even a sniff of gluten early on bam she couldnt poop for days

so weird... sweet potato is generally recommended to get things moving... so much conflicting info out there!

She loves yams so I have now mixed them with pears 50/50 :)

So true... and more evidence that babies should come with diagnostic systems like cars do ;)
