What breakfast cereals do you give your LOs?
« on: August 28, 2011, 11:07:49 am »
Hi,

Just looking for some more ideas as to breakfast type cereals suitable for my DD (9.5mos old).
She is really not fussed on porridge or Weetabix but will have them occasionally. On rare occasions I have given her Cheerios and Rice Krispies which she enjoys but I'm a bit concerned about the sugar in them as Cheerios are 25% sugar and Rice Krispies are 17% I think.  :-\

I mix up her breakfasts with other things such as crumpets, toast, fruit, scrambled eggs etc but it is the meal she seems to enjoy least so looking for a few more ideas.
Many thanks! :D x

Have you tried shredded wheat?

It's hard finding cereals in the UK that are child friendly. Once mine got past 1, I did relax about the sugar a bit, they have whatever cereal they will eat now (except I don't buy any thing that's chocolate or has the phrase "frosted" in the title ::)) we don't add any extra sugar and at least the cereals are fortified so they are getting a few vitamins.

Murray always had Ready Brek as it has added calcium and he was on a dairy free diet.  He still loves it now, or I make him porridge (oats cooked in oat milk!). I find Weetabix goes right through him :(
L x Having a bw break from 1 Feb 2012 - if you want to get in touch please send me a pm.  I may not be here but you are all in my thoughts xxxx (probably be back some time)

still happily married, just not counting!

Thanks ladies. She has had ready brek as it is a bit less bulky than normal porridge oats.

It is really difficult to get cereal isn't it, especially when DH has a sweet tooth too. ::)
Does ordinary puffed wheat (not sugar puffs) have a lot of salt/sugar?
Will try some shredded wheat and I like that so it won't go to waste. Thanks! :)

Hello Nicola!
You could try the muffins recipe that Sara gave me once, it's delicious my DD loves it! You can make it with baby's granola or with natural oatmeal. I prefer oatmeal since it's easier to find. Here it is:

1 cup of oatmeal flakes
1 cup of apple puree (peel and cut 1 1/2 apple, steam for 5min and then puree)
1/2 banana (smashed)
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup apple juice (I think you can substitute for any natural juice)
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup baby's cereal (I used rice cereal)
1/4 cup brown sugar (you can use less since all the fruits on it are very sweet)

Preheat oven at 375F. Mix oatmeal, apple sauce, apple juice, banana and oil. In separate bowl combine all dry ingredients and then mix all together. Put in special muffins pan, bake for 10-12 minutes.

Hope C likes it!!
Marie

I just had a look on the Tesco web site, there is a puffed wheat cereal by the Good Grain Company which for a 15g serving has 11.1g of carbs - of which sugars 0.3g and trace amount of sodium! Pretty good I would say ;) There are probably more around too!

Marie thanks for posting that as I forgot to.write it down when Sara posted it in our BC. I'm going to make some spinach and cheese muffins this week so will make some of those too.

Laura thanks for looking that up. They sound quite a good option and would make a good finger food too. Will get some and hope  she likes them.

Marie, the instructions in your recipe say to mix oil with the oatmeal and fruit, but there's no oil in the ingredient list. Can you clarify? I'm excited about these because they're dairy and egg free for Dylan!

There have been a few threads in the past about cereal, and it always astounds me that there are such vast differences in sugar content in different countries.   :-\  In the US, Cheerios have just one gram of sugar, and are a snack staple for so many Moms!  I wonder why that is?

My dd likes Wheat Chex (which have a ton of iron) mixed with Cinnamon Life.  That's a great dry snack too!

Blueberry panckaes were a huge favorite at that age too!

Leorah used to have something that was like mini shredded wheat with raisins or dried apricots in the middle, they were without added sugar and were an own brand, I can't remember but I think M&S or Tesco, actually it may have been Sainsburys, sorry it was a long time ago and my mum used to bring them over  :P

Uppsss sorry! yes I missed 2 Tbs of oil that you could substitute with butter if you like.

Sorry about that!

Today I made pancakes with hole wheat flour and DD loved them so much!! I put just a tiny bit of Maple Syrup at she went crazy about them :)

I give them any cereal they want.  At first I worried about "sugary" cereals and then I started looking at the labels.  Here is the info I just gleaned from 3 currently in our pantry, the first a healthy cereal, and the other two generally considered sugary cereals....note the serving size of each is the same, 3/4 a cup.

1. Multi Bran Chex (160 calories dry cereal and 10g of sugar)
2. Lucky Charms (110 calories dry cereal and 10g sugar)
3. Captain Crunch Crunchberries (100 calories 11g sugar).

The sugar difference is negligable.  The calorie count in the healthy cereal is actually the highest.  What healthy cereals do have, of course, is higher nutritional value (The Chex have 4g of protein versus trace amounts for the others).

I am not endorsing sugary cereals, I am just saying some things get demonized when they shouldn't necessarily be.

Actually, if I say I let my kids eat pretty much any cereal, as evidenced by the fact I have sugary cereals in my pantry, then I guess I am endorsing them after all....

But, like a PP, I am going to blame my DH for this.  He loves cereal and always wants the sugary stuff.

I know what you mean Texomamama :D We are not hugely strict on a lot of things as I believe everything in moderation is ok but if I can find a good cereal that she will eat that has less sugar, it's worth a shot!

Thanks for your input! :D x

Do you have Nutrios over there across the pond??  Here in Canada, they are marketed by Heinz and are found in with other baby food (like baby cereal and jarred food/formula).  They are like Cheerios but have almost no salt/sugar...

Texomama, I agree that with many cereals, there is a negligible difference in sugar content. But for us, 10 or 11 grams of sugar in a breakfast cereal is too much (this is what our family practices, no judging) and we try to keep it under 5 grams. So Cheerios (1 gram) What Chex (5 grams) or Special K (3 grams) are more our speed.  All of the ones I just mentioned are nutritious as well with regard to iron content and daily vitamins.  Plus our dd is dye-free, so alot of breakfast cereals aren't an option.  Again, not judging, just explaining our position.   :)

Well we got some of those puffed wheat which are less than 1g of sugar so will report back.

I made a nice loaf cake yesterday with Weetabix that was sugar-free too!
Thanks!
Haven't heard of Nutrios Kara but will look out!
