How long will I make milk for???
« on: August 29, 2011, 00:47:45 am »
Mods - not sure if this belongs here or in health and medical. Feel free to move :-*

So I bf'd my twins for 6 weeks and switched to formula. I could still express a little if I wanted to but nothing major in engorgement when I stopped. They got a really bad chest cold when they were 14 months and I slept with D on my chest one night and had a major letdown of milk :o. This was after 12+ months of stopping. When I got pg with E, the milk dried up immediately and turned to colostrum.

I bf'd E until almost 13 months :D and I'm still making tons of milk. She's now going on 16 months. I didn't have engorgement or any other issues when I stopped but every once in a while after a cuddle with her I have a bit of a letdown of milk. I have a bit dribble out when I do a breast exam (which in light of recent events with a dear bw'er and breast cancer is about 6 or 7 times per month). I have cystic tissue so I do check each lump out and I know this may stimulate things a bit but how long could this keep up?

Can anyone tell me how long I can potentially be lactating for after stopping bf'ing?

TIA

Vicki

Oh, for me it was about a year or more later...this was after Spencer as I never stopped from when I weaned Masyn until I was pregnant.  Not huge amounts, just a dribble here and there, and even now that Spencer is 3 when I hear a crying baby or get really emotional I get the feeling of a letdown even though there is def. no milk left! It's a very odd sensation.

That's ecactly it. It's kinda weird feeling, though sometimes there is a bit of milk. Especially if I'm in the shower and I hear one of the girls crying.

Thanks, glad to know it's not just me :)

I still have milk Vicki, but we've only been done for two months. But I don't leak and never really had the reaction of crying/cuddles = let down so not very similar ;)
