Well prunes aren't, LOL.  I think a balance of anything in moderation is fine, of course that's easier said than done when we're talking first foods.  I don't think meat is constipating, so if her 'meal' was centred around meat with some fruit and veg, and even added cereal, then that's a balanced meal.  Hayden reacted to rice, and like I said all cereals made her reflux worsen.  She was fine on all veg and meat, with some fruit.  She was 8 months old when we first tried solids though. 5 months is still a bit young, and your LO should be getting mostly BM.  If your LO is getting constipated maybe she isn't ready for solids?  There's no rush, really. Solids at this stage are mainly snacks and for experimentation.  If something doesn't agree with her, then I'd leave it for a bit.  Feed her more BM, it's the only miracle food for them anyways, and give her a month or two to let her digestive system mature.  :-*

yup... apples are constipating too (unless given as a whole fruit!) and too much dairy can be constipating too ;)  And anything random that your LO decides to add to the list :)  Oh, and potatoes!

Good things for not causing constipation are: pears, peaches, plums, apricots, cherries, peas, beans...

I think it varies by kid.  The things we found constipating were banana and that was pretty much it.

Trade you kids Lemonthyme!  LOL!  Mine gets backed up so easily at times!  Right now, teething is keeping everything on the move - a little too much!

Yeah, if anything he's always been the other way.  Loves his fruit and veg and was breastfed till he was 13 months which helped keep things moving I think.  Don't get me wrong, when his solids increased around 9/10 months his poos did get more solid ("finally I can flush the stinkers" I thought) but it didn't last!

LOL!  I celebrated being able to flush a little too soon as well!  Now I would give anything to get back to that place!

When did your LO's poo start to become more formed and not considered constipation? We have soft formed poos...like playdough balls!

I started solids at 5 months and could flush at 7 months once she was eating a variety and a good quantity :)

Now we are battling with loose poops... ugh.

So how can you tell if constipated if you have the kind you can flush? My guy really gets sad and cries when he poos so I figure that is not good! Have been giving prune juice and today finally got a peanut butter poo. I am just confused about what they should be at this point (9 months). We are teething too so maybe that is why we got a looser one. I am going to start flushing! Why I haven't I thought of that! :)

I think if your child gets really upset while pooing that's not a good sign.  Babies make faces and that's normal but it's not normal to be in pain.

Agree with Lemonthyme... I always knew DD was constipated by the stickyness so to speak :)  If it would roll around in the diaper - not good... if it sticks slightly and you have to shake it a little, that's good :)

I use cloth, that's why I flush :)

My doctor told me I could start rice cereal at 4 months old.  My son will be 4 months on the 25th.  Do you add it to the bottle or try and spoon feed it.  How many times a day do you give it?  If I put it in the bottle, I will have to make the nipple hole bigger or move to next size, but the next size is for 6 month old babies.  I don't know what is best.  Is rice cereal really necessary or should I just wait until he is 6 months?  Does it help with getting then to sleep longer?  My friend tried spoon feeding it to her daughter at 4 months to try and get her to start taking solids before she started baby food at 6 months?

I would not give solids to baby at 4 months.  Chances are he still has a tongue thrust reflex that would make it really hard anyways.  Is your doctor older??  It is no longer recommended to give solids before 6 months in most cases... doctors used to recommend it at 4 months though.

Do not put cereal in his bottle - it is a choking hazard.

He will not sleep longer, in fact, many babies sleep worse when solids are started as their little bodies are trying to digest food all night long.

When he is ready for solids (he will start to show interest and should be able to sit with minimal support on his own) - you can start with rice cereal one time per day... morning is best so that any reaction will happen early in the day and you can react to it as needed and baby will not be uncomfortable at night for bedtime.

I would hold off for at least 6-8 weeks.

Kara, my pediatrician is older and said that I could start rice cereal at 4 months, but I wasn't sure about doing that especially if there is no benefit.  The last thing I want or need is more feeding problems.  I have enough now as it is.  Thanks for the information.
