Nearly 1 year old needing a night feed!
« on: September 04, 2011, 19:31:20 pm »
Hi all,

My DD is 1 years old on Tuesday.  :)

For the past couple of weeks she has been waking up in the night / early hours for a bottle, 4-5oz. I have offered water but she will not settle unless she has her milk. Once she has her milk fix she goes straight back to sleep.

She has 3 bottles and 3 meals a day. I offer milk before solids, should i be offering food 1st now?

1st bottle (7oz) is around 8am
1nd bottle (6oz) around 1.30pm
3rd bottle at bedtime (7/8oz) - around 7pm

Any ideas on how I can stop this from continuing?! x x x

How long did you offer water for? Was it just one night and after a while you gave her milk, or have you tried a couple of nights but given milk each time?

I think at this age you can do two things, you can reduce the oz every couple of nights and then just offer water when the bottle gets down to a couple of oz or just go cold turkey and stop giving her the milk. You will get a couple of difficult nights and she will be hard to settle but if you keep giving her the milk to settle then she will keep on needing the milk to settle.

You day routine looks fine, how much solids is she having? If you can increase the amount of solid food she has as after 1 they only really need 12-14oz of dairy to get their needs met and you will be looking to reduce her milk and switch to cups now anyway.

What do you think?

Thanks for your reply. We offered water for 1 week and she was awake from 4am and wouldnt go back to sleep, we offered water but she didnt want it.

I think your right about encouraging more solids into her daily diet now, i think she's filling up on too much milk during the day, not having enough solids thus waking up hungry int the early hours.

I will start to offer solids before her milk now i think x x x
