crying but not actually awake
« on: September 09, 2011, 22:27:44 pm »
So we started doing EASY anout a month and a half ago and it has been very up and down, we also had to get rid of the dummy at the same time. Cam was doing great but now has started crying frequently during the night, most of the time he is not actually awake, eyes still closed, I go in and ssshhh pat him and he settles but then same thing between five and fifteen mins later. We have also had a few occasions where he wakes up screaming, eyes open, full on scream and won't settle until he has seen both myself and my partner ?night terrors.

His EASY is as follows-

E - 6am wake - recently has been waking at five but we leave him playing in his cot until six. Feeds just after waking 180mls.
A - Plays for two hours - proficient roller already at five months so gets lots of exercise. Not a new skill has been doing it for a few weeks.
S - 8am if 6am wake up, but always two hours after he wakes and sleeps soundly for 1.5 to 2 hours. Has been having a three hour nap if his night has been bad.
E - 10.30 180mls
A - for another two hours of play.
S - 12.00 another 1.5 to two hour nap
E - 14.30 180mls
A - for another two hours usually
S - 16.00ish a forty min nap usually
E - 17.30
A - bath at 18.00, some quiet play time and in bed by 18.30. usually goes straight down. The crying doesn't start until at least after midnight. When he was only doing it once or twice a night I use to pick up/put down and he would wake and then resettle himself to sleep, but I don't want to keep waking him all the time.

Any ideas appreciated.

He may be teething no definate bumps but chews particularly on hard or cold things. He also had a gastro bug recently which made things worse but is over that now.

(((HUGS)))

How is his reflux now?  The NWs sound like discomfort?  Is he teething?  This can make reflux worse.  Also, when my LOs had a GI bug, their reflux flared for a few weeks after.  They both needed a med increase for a short time after.

I wouldn't let your LO sleep more than 2 hours.  I know you are playing catch up.  But ideally, you want that sleep at night.  Two hours is a great nap and will definitely reduce OT in your LO.

I think he is teething, should I be doing anything is my main concern, it doesn't seem to make any difference if I am in the room or not, and as he is asleep should I just be leaving him unless he wakes up?

Not sure with reflux, day time he has no reflux symptoms at all anymore, his nights with reflux use to make him grunt and back arch and kick when it was bad so this seems a bit different to me.

When my dd would do this we would know that later she would properly wake so we would give her dream meds, that is a small amount of milk in a bottle with some medicine mixed in, she would take it without waking up and the pain would ease before it got to the stage of her waing and being properly distressed.

BTW it doesn't sound like your LO is having night terrors, my dd has them as well and during night terrors LO is totally unaware of their surroundings so would not be comforted by seeing you and DH, maybe he is having nightmares which are worst when OT/ill/teething.

Breakthrough slept through last night without so much of a peep, hmmm could it all just have been down to the gastro and now he is well and truely over it, or was last night a one night wonder? Hmmmm not sure but I certainly enjoyed all the sleep!
