Change formula?
« on: September 12, 2011, 16:52:02 pm »
Hi! My 8 week old was ebfed, but since last week, I started giving him a df of formula at 10 pm. It helped a lot b/c he started waking until 5 am for his next BF.

The problem is that he became constipated, so I stopped giving him the DF, but we are having 2 night feeds again (1 am and 5 am). I want to give him the DF again, I really need to sleep.

My question is how long should I try the formula before changing to a different brand?

What formula were you using?

Its really common for EBF bubs to get constipated with formula as its just so much harder for them to digest. I found Aptamil to be good un for keeping constipation at bay. No chanve you could pump for the DF? I never wanted to because it seemed to miss the point of doing it in the 1st place!

Did the constipation resolve on just BM? You could try an Easy Digest formula, if you are in the UK the Aptamil one, and I *think* the Cow & Gate one contain a stool softener which would help. If you aren't UK it's worth researching to see if your equivalent formula has it.

Hi! Thanks for your answers!! And yes, when I stopped giving the formula and went back to bmilk, the constipation stopped.

I can get the Aptamil here, but which one should I buy? Just the Stage 1? or is there a special one (Aptamil Easy Digest) as you said?  I'm not very familiar with the formula, so I don't know if all the Aptamil brand is easy digest or there's a special one?

Thanks for your help

hugs constipation is horrible

I used Cow and Gate Comfort milk, it leads to stools which are just like EBF baby stools, very messy though ;) xxx

Aptamil do their first milk which is just called Aptamil 1, the easy digest version is a different formula by the same company and is also a first milk, I just checked the dite and it's called Aptamil Comfort now http://www.aptamil.co.uk/products/article/aptamil-comfort?tr=carousel. If you are trying the ED it is a bit thicker than a normal formula so you may need the next size teat (same as for the Cow & Gate one PP mentioned).
