9 month old waking at night randomly
« on: September 16, 2011, 03:16:47 am »
My 9 month old DS used to sleep through the night from 7:30 pm to 7 am... no problems since he was 7 weeks old.
6 weeks ago (and we did not change anything...) he started waking up at night and not going back to sleep... he just wanted me to hold him, he would suck his thumb and stare at me for an hour or so and then slowly fall sleep.

I was tired of holding him, so now i put my hand on his back or he holds on to my hand and falls asleep an hour or two later. sometimes he wakes up 5 times but falls right back sleep, almost INSTANTLY as soon as i go to the room and put my hand on him, and sometimes he gets up and cires for till i go to the room and qites down as soon as i touch him but won't go back to sleep for an hour or so.

the wakings are not at the same time at night.. they are random, and the frequency is anywhere from 1 to 7

I was told to leave him cry it out once or twice and then he will get over this... BUT I HATE that i idea, i am not a fan of having a child cry it out... that is just cruel.

Any suggestions... I am ill and i am tired and i can not be doing this... i thought he was gonna get over it in a week or so as he could be teething... BUT IT IS JUST NOT GOING WAY... helpn please

It sounds like a bit of SA.

But can you post his routine in EAS format?

What does SA mean?

His Routine is pretty flexible.

Wake up at  6:30 or 7 am
E(formula)  7 am
A  7-9
S 9- 10:30 or 11

E (formula)  11
A 11 am to bedtime (he was napping fro 1.5 hours around 2 or 3.. and slowly it moved to 4 pm and eventually he dropped it)
E (solids)  1:30pm

E (formula) 3 pm
A
E (solids) 5:30 pm

Bath time  7 pm
Bedtime (anywhere from 7:20 to 8:45 ... me and my luck that day)

Aww hun, I think you have a very OT LO!  Your LO is only napping 1.5 hours the whole day?

I would push out that first A time to 3.5 hours and offer a short nap and then offer a proper nap 3-3.5 hours later.  I would push that first A time by 15 minutes every couple of days.

Is there a reason you aren't offering a second nap?

the night wakings were hapening long before my LO dropped his second nap.... i definatly want him to nap 2 a day but no matter what i did for 3 weeks, he did not want to nap at all. but this past week he has been naping around 4 pm for an hour or so...

My main issue is the night waking, as i said before, his night waking started 7 or 8 weeks ago... and at that time he was naping twice a day for an 1.5 hours... which is great cause he was not a great napper ever.

I know he is not teething, and i know it;s not food related.

So any ideas how i can stop him from waking up at night???

Ive been trying to not to touch him when he is sleeping and it is not working out verry well, he cries till i put my hand on him, then he falls sleep.... i feel like a hostage, alot of times he grabs my hand and won't let go till he passes out...i sit there for over an hour each night, and this is happening through the night sometimes.

When he naps at 4, what does your day look like?  I would think 1 hour that late in the day, would be too much sleep.

Are you seeing SA during the day?  Here are some tips for it.  Some of them are geared toward older toddlers.  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=212037.0

How about teething?  Is your LO teething?

I would think PU/PD would be appropriate for the NWs. But only after you have addressed the routine issues.

You said sometimes he naps for 1 hour at 4 and sometimes he doesn't.  Is your bt still the same with a long nap at that time?
but this past week he has been naping around 4 pm for an hour or so...

You will need to do some sort of gentle removall so that he learns to fall asleep on his own.  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=52857.0

HTH. :)
