How long will she eat baby food for?
« on: September 16, 2011, 14:56:09 pm »
Hi,

I have a 7.5mo DD who is eating all kinds of yummy jarred baby food, since about 6mo. I also happen to have a Beaba baby food maker which I have never used. It's brand new in the box.

At this point I'm not sure if it's worthwhile using the baby food maker... how much longer will my DD be eating baby food? When do they switch to regular people food? The baby food maker was about $150, so I just want to know if it's worthwhile using it at this point or if it will be cheaper to just keep her on jarred food until she advances.

Should I return/sell the Beaba at this point?
Thanks!

Sorry this was missed.  Some babies eat purees longer than others, depends on your child.  What does this food maker do? We just used a food processor to purée, and we still use it 9 years later.

Proud to have breastfed for a combined total of 35 months

I think it would be worth using the baby food maker unless you just like to not actually have to make the food.  As she gets older you would just puree it less and less.

We were already introducing chunks of "real people" food that she could grab for herself by 7.5 months, and we only used jarred food for convenience/extra variety till about a year.   Check out "baby led weaning" - some people never bother with purees at all - some evidence suggests that it actually increases choking hazard.  Any unsalted food that is gummable and does not contain allergens is pretty much ok from this point forward.

We just used a stick blender - I wouldn't have had enough use out of a specific baby food maker to justify the price! Although our baby food puree days are over I still use it for things like pasta sauce and soups!

If you haven't used it at this point I would return it.  I have the Beaba but I got it at a reduced price in a closing sale and I do love it but I made all my LOs baby food from scratch and didn't use jars except the odd fruit one.  So it did get a fair bit of use.  I make all DD2's food too and have used the Beaba maybe twice as my stick blender does the job just as well.

At 7.5-8 months they should be moving onto lumpier foods anyways so the beaba wouldn't be much use as it blends things really finely.

So sorry you post got missed :-[. I think that probably you will move on to mashing foods before too long anyway so at that price maybe return it?
