Reusing teats from DS1 for DS2.....4 years later - would you?`
« on: September 25, 2011, 11:13:53 am »
Just a quick one - would you reuse teats from 4 years ago? ITs not that we can't afford new ones or anything but I hate needless waste. I've had them out and checked them over - we threw any that looked cracked or brittle before we stored them  - they seem OK, but I know rubber (or whatever they're made of ) can deteriorate over time - I'm sure if I asked Breastflow they would say buy new ones, but WWYD?

I used the same bottles but bought new teats for DD. You are really *supposed* to replace teats and dummies after a few months use anyway so it would be better to buy new.

I bought new bottles/nipples for my second--they were 4 years apart as well. At the time bottles the bottles I had were not BPA free...but the new ones are apparently.

I bought new parts for my pump and new teats that I hardly ever used as I gave up using bottle with E at 7 weeks,...

Me too!  For the BPA reason!

H, if you use avent, I bought new teats and bottles and never used the flipping things and will happily send them to you.

Agree with Lolly in that they need replacing every few months anyway so I would def buy new ones. I was planning on using the same bottles but got new ones in a different set anyway xx

We had to throw most of the bottles away tbh as in the end we gave up with all the bottle warmers etc and used to put boiled water in the bottles then cool it in the fridge, then we knew exactly how much boiled water to add to make an instant ready to go bottle. This of course over time cracked the bottles!! The price to pay for not mucking around with bottle warmers.

Thanks Shiv, would have been great! TBH though you never know what your LO is going to take to! Maybe we'll try the old ones and if LO is happy then get some new ones.

Having said all that I'm planning to BF primarily, but by "accident" we ended up with H where he would switch literally feed to feed (or mid feed even) from BF to bottles, so hoping we might be lucky enough to have the same situation so I can get a break every now and again........

I haven't really bottle fed, only used bottles for giving reflux meds before feeds, but we are using the same bottles and teats that we had for dd1 - doesn't seem to be causing any issues here!  Why are you supposed to replace them regularly?

I would think its more for wear and tear reasons..same with pacifiers, too.

Its to do with the rubber breaking down with all the use and washing etc.

If the teats were newer, I would reuse them.  Given that they have been stored for 4 years - toss them a buy a couple new ones to try out.
