EWs, short naps, OT
« on: September 26, 2011, 00:20:26 am »
Okay so the very day after I posted somewhere about ds' wonderful sleep pattern things kind of went south.

We moved to 1 nap when we finally got him sleeping independently in mid-Aug. DS is 14.5 mo. Nap is usually 12:15/30 to 1:45/2. Bedtime usually 6:30 and up close to 6. Ds has been teething molars off and on and last week I gave both tylenol and advil and he started giving me 2+ hr naps and doing 11.5 and occasionally 12 hr nights, 7-7!!! Well, literally the day after I posted about how wonderful our routine was getting to be after going to 1 nap, he went back to the 1.5hr nap and a 6:30 BT. Mornings have been getting pretty early 5:30, or 5.

He has had a cold the last week which has certainly not helped matters. And we also have the problem that at daycare he is not napping well. The longest has been 1 hr, but last week, the 2 days he slept there is was 30 minutes one day and 45 the other. I am sometimes surprised at how he manages on so short a nap, but things are catching up to him. This morning he was up at about 5, quiet for a bit before I got him at 5:45 but I'm not sure if he slept any more. Aimed for a slightly earlier nap at 12:15 and he went down fine but then woke at 1:20 crying. I let him try to settle for a bit but he wouldn't. He was definitely pretty OT this afternoon and was asleep by 6:20.

So...I really don't know whether to tinker with his routine. The slightly earlier nap didn't help today. I fear an earlier bedtime as he might just wake even earlier. He has occasionally done a 12 hr night, and slightly more often 11.5 hours, but usually it's 11ish. I would really prefer a 7pm BT and 6 or later wakeup if that were possible but I can't push him too fast on that.

Any suggestions?

Just a quick reply - Illness and teething can mess up sleep and get them into OT/UT loops. The waking up crying from naps also sounds like OT to me. I'd definitely try for an earlier bedtime on the days he has short naps. It's unlikely that he'll wake earlier, in fact he'll probably sleep better. Once he catches up with his sleep at night, then you can experiment with pushing his day forward, if you want to.

I've just had a very similar experience with OT/UT - see this post http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=216754.0

Firstly, never do this....

The minute you mention how well things are going they go wonky straight away!  :P  ::)

I agree with PP though, he definitely sounds like he's got very OT from the cold and teething. An earlier BT often worked for us - I was scared to do this too, but it can really help sometimes and rarely meant that DS woke any earlier - we often had a later wake up. It certainly can help to catch up on missed sleep.

Thanks for your replies. As I feared, he woke at 4:30 this morning  :P. It's going to be a long time till nap time. How early would you do BT?

Usually 6:30. Last night 6:20. When we had those nice long naps it was 7.

It all sounds like OT to me. I would aim for a bedtime of around 5.30/5.45 tonight. I know that sounds really early but he needs to catch up on all that lost sleep and he's bound to be tired today after being up so early. If you try to put him to bed and he fights it, then give him another 10mins or so awake time. With my little one, I found that if she went to bed OT she would almost definitely wake up stupidly early the next day.

What do you think CathX?

I was going to suggest 6pm BT, but I do agree that with that extra early start you might want to take it even earlier.

How has the day gone/going napwise?

He is definitely tired today. Fussy, clingy etc. He is on one nap so we have a while to wait for that. Even when I was APing to sleep it was tough to get 2 naps into him and they usually would only total 1.5 hr max, so I don't want to try for 2 naps.

I am hesitant to make his nap time much earlier that his normal 12:15/30 as I think he will just end up waking earlier in the day and still short napping. What do you think? Regardless of when he goes down it is a huge A time, so I am banking on the set nap time as being the best idea. Maybe aim for 12?

I think you may need to go a bit earlier. But, you know your son and you are with him and can see how he is coping with the OT.

If he used to have 6.5hrs A time before his nap then this morning's A time will be greatly increased if he was up at 4.30am and doesn't sleep until 12, so I would perhaps aim for 11.30am.

It's 11 now. We were just out and of course he's yawning a lot.  I am just fearful he will wake at 12:30 then have a very long afternoon to get through as well, even if I do early BT. But, I will get some lunch into him now and try to get him down soon.

Becky, just curious here as EWs are creeping in again. How long is his first A time?  Will he nap better with a longer first A?

Sabs, he is on one nap so that A time is quite long. It's definitely not UT. Lately he's been waking by 5:30 latest. Nap time is 12:15/30. But we have had a cold and he short naps at daycare which isn't helping.

Still I managed to get him down at 12 today and he's still asleep at 1:40, so hoping we get some catch up happening here. If he's up by 2, would I still aim for that 6pm BT?

Yep, I'd still go for an early bedtime, he's got a lot of catching up to do :)

So glad he was having a good nap - how long did he do in the end?
